The Switch has an overall bigger selection of games, but a 3DS can be hacked and, thanks to hShop and emulators, you can play pretty much any pre-Switch handheld Nintendo game on it, even retro games! It's also a lot more portable. Question: Is getting a 3DS, hacking it and using hshop more bang for my buck than buying a Switch?

That is not true, you can't play any console released after the N64 (for Nintendo) and the New 3DS can barely play PS1 games. I've seen YT vids of people playing PS1 games on their 3DS, and the footage looks really choppy. My N3DS XL runs doom 64 at a solid 28-30 fps, haven’t tried ps1 yetThat is not true, you can't play any console released after the N64 (for Nintendo) and the New 3DS can barely play PS1 games. (#176)It sort of depends on what you're going to use it for. I would look into what games are available on each platform, and consider which one you'd rather go with personally.

I will say, the 3DS is a fantastic emulation handheld, especially the “new” models. Pretty much anything pre-PS1 can be emulated pretty smoothly, and if you have one of the new models, you can even run N64 and PS1 games (albeit with mixed results).

I tested doom 64 and SM64 and got 25-30 fps on both of them(#176)It sort of depends on what you're going to use it for. I would look into what games are available on each platform, and consider which one you'd rather go with personally.

From what I've heard, N64 emulation runs pretty well on the new models— PS1 is a bit more choppy.
You also probably shouldn't bother trying to run it on an old model. My original 3DS from mid-2013 has massive lag spikes when running SM64, and I got crazy graphical glitches when trying to play Paper Mario.

Yeah, n64 emulation should be left to the new models (which I’ve also had freezing and crashes with)(#198)Good to know!I tested doom 64 and SM64 and got 25-30 fps on both of them(#176)It sort of depends on what you're going to use it for.
