well first off i've always thought it's odd how people insist you don't play as kris in deltarune>
kris *is* the player character, and you control kris>
you sometimes shift control to other characters in instances that aren't even reliant on the soul
sometimes you control the soul outside of combat, but the soul is more often directly tied to kris>
i do think there's some discrepency between kris and the player, but i do not think that the *soul* is the embodiment of the player
kris has always had that soul, it is kris's soul
we control kris's soul, we control kris by proxy
i don't think the soul is the player, i don't think kris and their soul are as seperate as people think it is, and i also think deltarune's overall story angle is much more straightforward and the meta stuff is mostly in the background and in some cases used as red herrings>
i find it exceedingly exhausting when people treat deltarune as if it's going for the exact same thing as undertale>
also i think that the way people see the player in undertale is a little bit small in scope
the way undertale was written, the lines are blurred more and more between chara, frisk, and the player depending on *all sorts of choices* and just as much by every individual's interpretation
and i feel like most people's view on the lore and concepts in undertale and deltarune consist nigh entirely of what they've read online rather than views formulated through their own experiences with the game>

sorry i took so long to reply i was playing through deltarune to check something real quick.
when do you control other characters? i know in chapter 1 there's the dungeon section with Susie, although you don't directly control her there. in fact, no matter which way you tell her to go, Susie will walk to the left then go back to the right. you don't control her. that said, when Susie fights Lancer, the soul enters the screen from the direction of Kris' cell, which Toby confirmed in the anniversary stream is intentional, and the Goner Creator sequence seems to show the soul that we control coming into being in some way. and in chapter 2, the scene with Susie and Noelle shows us that we have no ability to influence Susie at all - she says what she was going to say regardless of which dialogue options you pick. it is strange how we're able to see what Susie is doing in these scenarios while the camera stays fixed on the soul during the chapter 2 bathroom scene, but if i remember correctly both of the sequences where we follow Susie start with Ralsei asking us to think about what Susie's doing, so maybe that's his doing somehow?
as for the themes of Undertale and Deltarune, i agree that they're different. undertale is about how your choices affect not only you but the people around you, while Deltarune seems to be about a lack of choice, what with the Goner Creator, Susie explicitly telling you this at the start of chapter 1, and the lack of any different endings in chapter 1 (although chapter 2 does have Snowgrave, so maybe that's a red herring). i think that, especially with the Spamton NEO fight, Deltarune is going to put Kris' lack of control in the spotlight as one of the main themes, but there's definitely other stuff going on

it's certainly still possible that they're different characters, although it was almost confirmed by the official Undertale tarot cards of all things. originally the deck was going to include a card labelled Gaster which showed the Mystery Man, although it wasn't included in the final product. i'd assume this is because Toby Fox doesn't want to reveal meaningful lore in a set of tarot cards (he stated once before that he wanted all the lore to exist in the game, although his stance may have changed since). that's just my theory though
