Who’s the best character in the game, do you think?

You already know the answer to this, in my opinion. I’ve told you before, but now, I think I’m going to make a long essay about why I think Joker is the best. I’ve been wanting to do this, anyway, but now this is the perfect opportunity.

WHY JOKER IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN SMASH

Joker is the best character in the game, and it’s all thanks to his absolutely wonderful moveset and design. Let’s go into it piece by piece. But before I begin, I wish to explain that Joker has a really important concept, so I’m going to explain his down special first.

Down Special
Joker is a very unique character. In Persona 5, he has a Persona that helps him in battle named Arsene. In the game, your down special can summon him. It puts you in a state that’s kind of similar to countering, and it lasts for three seconds, rather than part of a second like most characters. When your opponent his you when you’re using the down special, it will charge up your Rebellion Gauge, which is a bar next to your damage that will charge up on its own, but faster when you’re attacked, and much faster than that if you’re attacked using the down special. Once you’re done charging up, it’ll knock back the opponents a bit.

Once you’ve charged the Rebellion Gauge up enough, Arsene is activated! He will charge up all of your attacks and make them stronger. When you use the down special with Arsene, your moves change! He has a unique down special…it works as both a counter (called Tetrakarn) and a deflector (called Makarakarn)! No one else has this ability in the entire game! It increases the original damage the opponent was going to inflict by 1.8%, so it’s very powerful. Doing a Tetrakarn toward the corner of a flat map can also result in perfect meteor smashes, so it’s very satisfying.

Neutral Special
Joker has a unique weapon as his neutral special… a gun. If you hold it, it will continuously fire bolts at the opponent. One huge advantage with this weapon is that the timeframe of the bullet’s attack is so fast that it can’t be reflected, so it counts as a melee weapon. Technically, the weapon can be countered, but countering does nothing, as you’re shooting bullets from afar, so the counter will hit no one.

It also has a bunch of super cool button combinations. For instance, jumping after using the gun will repeatedly fire bullets down at the opponent. I love using that move so much, as it is super effective, and it will provide enough time for another attack.

You can also use it in midair. Moving left to right with the gun will allow you to slide across the sky, firing bullets, which is useful for dodging attacks. Pressing up while in midair with the gun will cause Joker to shoot his gun in all directions over and over until he hits the ground. Pressing down while in the air with Joker’s gun will cause him to shoot repeatedly downward at the opponent until he hits the ground. I didn’t realize how significant this was until @Prime689 pulled a super impressive move where he was knocked high into the air and did that until he hit the ground. I couldn’t move, attack, dodge, shield, or anything else while I was being hit, so I took a lot of damage.

This attack does even more damage and fires even more rapidly when Arsene is active, and the makes Joker really, really, really strong.

Side Special
Joker’s side special is called Eiha to begin with. With the snap of a finger, Joker shoots fire at you. It seems to do so little damage…until you keep receiving more and more damage every second for a little while. It does a really good amount of damage at the end, so I think it’s really effective. Also, when the opponent is at about 75% or more, they’ll be launched fairly high, so that’s perfect to combine with an up air to kill the opponent easily.

When Arsene is active, this will cause even more knockback, and it will inflict even more damage, making it a truly wonderful weapon. This is ideal for using on opponents who are waiting on the edge for you when you’re about to recover. Hit them with an Eiagon, which will distract them enough for the recovery to work.

Up Special
Joker’s gun comes with a special ability: his grappling hook. When you’re decently close to the edge, you can use the grappling hook to get back up. It has such a long range. Heck, you don’t even have to be within the sight of the screen to be able to use it, as long as you’re underneath the edge somewhere. It’s so incredibly useful, but the downside to it is that using the grappling hook too much results in you “running out” of grappling hook to use, so you have to use it with care.

When Arsene is active, however, you can use the Wings of Rebellion. It allows you to soar in the air with Arsene’s wings! It’s also an extraordinarily useful recovery, but it goes further out than the grappling hook. It’s ideal for meteor smashes, which I will discuss in more depth later, or simply kicking someone into the side of the screen. The one downside, however, is that after using it, if you go immediately onto the ground, you’ll have to deal with his getting up animation for a split second, but this can be avoided by grabbing the edge, and jumping up and using a Tetrakarn if they retaliate.

Neutral Ground
It’s nothing much special without Arsene, to be honest, if you’re not pressing anything else. Arsene makes the attack super strong, it’s wonderful. But you can also slightly tilt it and it’ll still count as a neutral special, and it’ll work better. Joker strikes the opponent with his trusty blade! It’s very strong.

Side Ground
Oh my gosh, I cannot emphasize how useful this attack is. It allows Joker to make a really quick double-kick combo while moving to the side and knocking the opponent somewhere. This is incredibly useful for comboing, and it can be combined with a neutral air if the damage is high enough, or even a down air with Arsene. It’s so useful. It does so much more damage with Arsene, too, and it’s one of my favorite moves of his.

Down Ground
This reminded me of a Mega Man attack. Joker has a slide for his down ground. One considerable difference, however: Joker’s slide is longer than Mega Man’s slide. It allows for more time to slide someone into the air. I also love combining that with up air, especially once Arsene is active, as they both knock the opponent incredibly far.

Up Ground
With this, Joker will spin his blade into the air. It does tons of damage, but it doesn’t knock the opponent very far, which is actually a good thing. This allows Joker to do it again very easily. It’s good for juggling the opponent. When Arsene is active, it does even more damage. It’s a very effective attack.

Neutral Air
Joker’s neutral air will allow him to spin his blade from all directions at the opponent, so you don’t really have to be precise about where to aim. It’ll still knock the opponent up and allow you to use a side air to knock them to the side. When Arsene is active, the blade is a bit thicker, and it does more damage as well. It’s very, very useful for me.

Side Air
Oh, yes. The side air is a midair kick. I love using this against opponents when I can predict they’re going to jump. When Arsene is active, it lands a devastatingly powerful kick, and it’s incredibly useful for kicking people off the map before they can recover. Since the Wings of Rebellion reach out so far, I don’t have to worry about too much risk of falling off the map. It’s incredibly powerful.

Down Air
Oh gosh, this is even more powerful! This is one of my favorite Joker moves! This attack will get Joker’s blade to strike down at the opponent with a really awesome swing, but it’s even better with Arsene! Joker actually gets a meteor smash! This is extraordinarily useful for knocking opponents off the map, maybe even more so than the side air. This attack can also just be used on the ground to smash them on the ground, which won’t launch them. It’ll keep them in nearly the same spot, which is perfect for combos. The down air is super useful, and is one of my favorite Joker moves.

Up Air
Up air is almost just as good. Even without Arsene, Joker’s up air allows him to sort of somersault-handstand-kick into the air, and it knocks them upward! It’s perfect for juggling, and even stronger with Arsene. I’ve knocked tons of people off the edge when they were about 50%, which is insane. It’s very useful.

Side Smash
Gosh, this thing is so powerful. It does plenty of damage without Arsene. When someone’s off the edge, three of these hits with Arsene will destroy them, and maybe four if they just so happen to be lucky.

Up Smash
This is also powerful, but I don’t find as much use for it as the side smash and the up air. It’s very powerful in theory, but in application, I don’t use it too much unless I’m hitting the Smash Ball, which it works like a charm. Very powerful.

Down Smash
This is my favorite smash attack. It attacks from both sides. It can do the same thing the side special can do, except perhaps if they’re in the air. But that can easily be countered with a neutral air. Down Smash is so useful against opponents who are recovering. It knocks them right back in.

Final Smash
Oh yes, I love Joker’s Final Smash, the infamous All-Out Attack. It has so many pros to it, you know:
  • It can attack people who are hanging on the edge.
  • If you miss the opponent, you can turn back around.
  • The Final Smash just looks awesome in general.
  • It can be in sync with awesome pieces of music at times, and that really looks impressive.
  • It instant kills the opponent if you’re over 69%.
  • If the opponent is instant killed with the Final Smash on their last life, Joker has a special victory screen that appears.

Very great Final Smash, maybe the best in the game.

Victory Screen
Joker’s victory screen looks awesome. No matter which of the three you get, it shows really awesome looking red lines appearing from behind him that really makes the aesthetic interesting. You’ll also hear voices from any of the Phantom Thieves, which is nice. There are lots of clips to choose from. One of the victory screens, Joker runs, just like he does in Persona 5. In another victory screen, Morgana appears as a van for Joker to ride. The third one is a picture of Joker using the All-Out Attack on the opponent at the end of the game. All three are awesome.

Another additional feature is that the background, lines, and victory theme change according to whatever music was playing during the game. If the song was from Persona 3, the background and lines will turn blue, and the P3 victory theme will play. If the song was from Persona 4, the P4 victory theme will play with yellow background and lines. If anything else was playing, the Persona 5 victory theme plays, and the background and lines turn red. All three of the songs, by the way, are three of the five songs that are not followed by the remix of the Smash 64 selection theme. (The other two are Cloud and Sephiroth.) Joker’s victory screen is cool and unique, and I love it.

Alternate Costumes
Ah, who could add in a Persona character without the Persona lore? His costumes are really neat as well. His first one is his classic Phantom Thief outfit. The second one is the protagonist of Persona 1 or 2. The third is the protagonist of Persona 3, fourth for Persona 4, and fifth as an alternate Joker costume for Persona 5. The sixth is Goro Akechi (which is neat, since six is the evil number in lots of religions.) The seventh and eight are Shujin Academy outfits if you prefer to fight with style, which is awesome, and those two outfits are different from the style of the other six outfits. Joker has a lot of variety and is interesting to play with.

So with all of those reasons put together, that’s why I think Joker was a well-thought character for Smash. I hope you liked my essay, and I hope this is a reasonable explanation for why Joker is awesome.

Just like this. I removed the parts of the quote that I wasn’t responding to. Or, as @VioletCalico said, just say -snip-. Now, let’s get back on-topic. What do you guys think of my Joker post?
It’s great, very well written!
he got a ton of move names wrong and forgot a lot

The amount of static is giving me a headache. Exquisite voice acting.

Finally, Cloud's getting some love.

Maybe in a list of great characters, Little Mac is D, but my brother whooped up on me so many times as that boxer boi that I'm doubting whether or not he's a bad character. I guess most of the top 100 players didn't play as him or did incorrectly. Smash did him wrong ig.

Hey, this might be a crazy thought, but does Cloud's limit being at full charge make his attacks more powerful?

I haven't noticed a difference myself, but-

honestly its probably better for your main to be lower because it gives people less reason to get mad at you lol (not that it usually matters since its kinda just an excuse people use for why they lost and wgatnot). also tbh outside of really high level play tierlists dont matter all that much

Got this cool Joker stock icon keychain at a local Smash tournament last week. I am a Joker main, though I've only played the game for about two months now. I really only got Smash because of Joker (Persona 5 fan lol) but I ended up really liking the game and it is now the only fighting game I'm decent at, let alone play, lol.

Also, I'm starting to get Joker's infinite combo down! (called the Leffoble I think?) After learning it yesterday I practiced it today at school and got a 47 true combo during math class lol (ignore the incredibly crusty photo)

Which I *think* is good? What are the highest combos y'all have gotten in training mode? :D

How do you do a Leffoble? I’ve never heard of it. I don’t usually look up “Joker strategies” — maybe I should when I get back my Switch.

Yeah, I don't think everyone calls it by that name but you might've seen it before! It's when Joker continually up airs from below his opponent, who has to be on a low platform.

I watched this video to learn how to do it, and I recommend watching it for more information, but this is a brief summary of how I did it:
  1. Once you're under your opponent, tap the jump button very quickly to do as little of a hop as possible.
  2. Then, do your up air. By far the easiest way to do this is to set your right stick to tilt attacks then tilt it upwards quickly.
  3. Next, is the hardest part, which is doing the fast fall. If you do it too early, it won't register because you can only fast fall when you're already falling, and if you do it too late then you'll knock your opponent too far with the last kick of your up air. The key is to time it so that you only hit the first four upward hits, stunning them long enough for you to continue the combo, because if you fully hit them then they'll be knocked up too far.
These are the inputs that I use: Quickly tap the y button -> tilt the right stick upwards -> fast fall by tilting the left stick downwards -> and repeat. But you have to do it fast enough so your opponent doesn't have a chance to get out of the combo. Once you know how to do it it's just a matter of practicing it until you get the timings just right! You'll get the muscle memory for it pretty fast.
