Scratch Cat is nonbinary. This is confirmed by Scratch Team.

After lots of official statements from other Scratchers of Scratch, and interviewing the ST, and asking the scratch cat's friends, I can officially say that the scratch cat's gender is yes.


(To be serious here, the Scratch Cat's gender could be a male or female, but the Scratch Team didn't officially say it yet. So it's up to your imagination!)

Most people aren’t going to cause flame wars, and if they are, they probably won’t care to find any official announcement, thus theoretically keeping them away from the answer to the question.

I would like say that since Scratch Cat does not have an official gender, they are considered to be either male or female. I disagree with some Scratch Team members (ceebee and others) claiming that the Scratch Cat is non-binary.

If one identifies as non-binary, they are saying that they don't feel like a boy nor a girl, so they don't identify as either. That may mean that they feel somewhere in the middle of a male or a female. However, note that Scratch Cat's gender wasn't specified in the time of their debut. Scratch Cat is assumed to be male, so some Scratch Team members refer to the cat mascot with he/him pronouns.

But to say that Scratch Cat is non-binary in ultimatum, in my opinion, is not accurate, as identifying non-binary is far more specified than identifying as a male or a female. Probably, Scratch Team members claim that Scratch Cat is non-binary to show inclusivity among the Scratch community. Since Scratch Cat did not have a confirmed official gender, it is safe to assume that the Scratch Team used Scratch Cat as an opportunity to show their inclusivity to LGBTQ+, as officially identifying them as a non-binary anthropomorphic orange cat.

In summarization, Scratch Cat has no assigned gender, so in theory they could be any gender, but some Scratch Team members officially identify them as non-binary. I refer to Scratch Cat with usually he/him, but I referred to him as they/them in this post to accentuate the fact that he has no assigned gender in ultimatum.

When I was a Scratch Team member, I told others that the Scratch Cat is non-binary, but that they are okay with Scratchers assigning any gender as they see fit for their creations. This is still something I believe. Scratch Cat is happy to play as a boy, girl, or another gender, for the sake of encouraging creativity.

My brother christ “no assigned gender” is non-binary. Non-binary just means neither male nor female
