Why is this called Scratch?
Why is this website called Scratch? That's a very violent name for a website for kids. Something like “Poke!” would be better

Why is this called Scratch?
(#2)But this site isn't related to DJs and I don't really see how “Scratch” relates to the site itself. It's also a very violent word and encourages children to scratch other human beings, so it should be called “Poke” or something similar

(Or Scratch is meant to teach kids things their parents don't wanna)
Or maybe it should be called “Snap!” because you're snapping blocks together

Please read this: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/644243/?page=4#post-6767153
1. Also, that’s inappropriate. More inappropriate than Scratch, as said.
2. Snap is already taken.
3. It’s not. If that were the case, almost every child would be violent now.
4. The cat came from the fact that it was called Scratch.

Scratching is related to Scratch's remix function, which is where you build upon another persons creation, which is like remixing in music(where the idea came from)
Snap already exists, and i'm afraid the ST can't really wage war on snap.

Why is this called Scratch?
Oh my god this is rub 2.0. Didn’t expect the sequel to come out so soon.
And it really isn’t, it’s literally a word. Children aren’t going to scratch people just because they see the word. And by your logic, this means children are going to start poking people.

Why is this called Scratch?
Scratch takes its name from a technique used by disk jockeys called “scratching”, where vinyl records are clipped together and manipulated on a turntable to produce different sound effects and music. Like scratching, the website lets users mix together different media (including graphics, sound, and other programs) in creative ways by creating and ‘remixing’ projects, like video games, animations, music, and simulations.
i highly doubt just hearing the word “scratch” makes children think scratching other people is ok.

(#6)But children have been influenced heavily by video games before, so shouldn't it also apply to Scratch

I'm sorry but what..
That's literally a name, and cats Scratching each other really won't influence them.

Why is this called Scratch?
As others have mentioned, some of the other proposed names can also be taken inappropriately, so there's no winning there.
I guess in that case, Scratch really should be called… oh, let's say, “Hug.” Perhaps then some Scratchers Huggers may treat each other a little nicer, then.

Why is this called Scratch?
Technically, this question has already been answered.
And no, Scratch’s name should not be changed because:
1. Kids are smarter than you think, by hearing the word “Scratch” they will not begin intensly scratching eachother and everything they see.
2. Scratch is already an iconic name, so people may be confused if it was suddenly “poke.mit.edu” or anything else.
3. Im sure to change their name it would be somewhat of a hassle, because they’d have to change EVERY instance of Scratch on EVERY page, and probably EVERY legal document too.

Why is this called Scratch?
(#17)No!
it's called scratch cause you make games starting from scratch
When we started working on our new programming language in 2002, Oren Zuckerman suggested the name Scratch to evoke the type of activity we wanted to support with Scratch. Just as hip-hop disc jockeys use a “scratching” technique to mix together clips of music, we wanted Scratch to enable young people to mix together pieces of media in creative ways. We imagined that young people would not start from a blank slate (not “from scratch” — a common misinterpretation of the name), but rather by building on the work of others and their own previous work.(Also, it's not just games.)

“facebook” isn't related to faces or books, your point?(#2)But this site isn't related to DJs and I don't really see how “Scratch” relates to the site itself. It's also a very violent word and encourages children to scratch other human beings, so it should be called “Poke” or something similar

also “Snap!” is already a coding program, so the st could get in trouble if they used the same name as other coding program.
