Yes, I know that scratch is against discord, but why not make really really strict moderation? I feel like a lot of people would get help from it easily and would be more beneficial than bad

No support. If Scratch is against Discord, then why would they make a Discord server? Besides, what if a kid goes on discord and thinks that all Discord servers have as strict of moderation as this hypothetical discord?

Well for the first reason I feel like Scratch should change their choice and go for a discord server because that is what the community would want and I believe that despite being a open chat, it would not cause any harm.
Also if a kid went on discord and sees this strict moderation, they would see how one shouldn’t act in such ways, which is better than exposing them to inappropriate content.

2: Let me explain.
Kid A wants to go on the discord server, and makes an account with a shared email (much like what they would for, say, cubeupload)
Kid A joins the Discord server.
10 or so minutes later, A is bored on just this one server and decides to join another server.
Can you see what would go wrong this time?

☆ Although this might be a bit helpful for few users(since users can chat in real time, send images and use more features not available in a normal Scratch comment section), your suggestion have a lot more downsides than its benefits.
Even if the chat had a filter, voice chats/channels cannot be moderated unless a mod was in that same channel(although this problem can be solved by not having voice channels).

Users below 13 can't join Discord(most of scratch is 11-12 years old as of the time I wrote this post, unless they fake their age to join get a Discord account). Even if kids did fake their age and get an account, there is also a chance of their parents/guardians finding out and putting the blame on Scratch, especially if the child joined inappropriate servers or got messaged by creepy users.

Discord was banned from Scratch for a reason. Even if the Scratch Server was 100% safe, kids could always join another server that potentially wouldn't be as safely moderated as the Scratch Server would, like DifferentDance8 said in the quote below:

this is more than implemented without that site
Also, Scratch is 0+, Discord is 13+. Most people who have shared their age on here that I’ve seen are, maybe, like, 10. 12, tops.

Yes. Then it would get raided and trolls would appear and it would just not be a good idea, considering ST has better things to do.

I say no-support as most of Scratch's members are kids, and kids aren't allowed on Discord as Discord is 13+ because of COPPA as Discord can not collect data on people under 13 (Kids), and Scratch does not like that website because its unmoderated (meaning there is swearing, and other stuff that Scratch doesn't allow)

You can send a direct message to other server members, which can lead to private chatting, which is not allowed; even though you can disable direct messages from server members, they can only change the private messaging feature. In addition, the Scratch team cannot moderate their DMs, leading to people spamming server members with Community Guideline-breaking messages since there is no filter on discord.

TD;LR: this would lead to private messaging

No support. This cord (shhhhh I had to say it wrong, I'm not taking a risk like everyone else is on this post) is for 13+, and strict moderation wouldn't be possible. The child could go to other this cord servers that have no moderation and are 13+, and BOOM, they can never unsee how many bad words and inappropriate phrases were in the server. The child would be better off deleting their this cord account or not even making one at all. And of course they would fake their age.

What I find strange is that Scratch has a Twitter, and they link it on the main site, despite it being banned. Twitter also has unmoderated chat and is 13+, so why can't Discord not be allowed to be linked as well? Just put a warning that when you click on the link that Discord is for 13+, and that the Scratch Team has no liability for what you may come across.

However, Twitter is much better for updates as the ST can link specific tweets. With Discord, it has a much larger emphasis on private messaging.

Here is the thing, you need a discord account to view messages on that server, unlike Twitter, where you can browse Scratch's tweets as a guest.

How is the Scratch Team ‘failing kids?’

Discord is 13+ only and we already have the forums, which are indexable by search engines and therefore help more users.

EDIT: Almost forgot, but Discord allows you to instant message other users completely privately. Even if the hypothetical Scratch Discord was the most overmoderated space on earth there would be nothing they could do about private conversations which they have historically been against for user safety reasons.

A lot of good points made above: age limitations, private messaging potential are probably the most problematic. Let's stick with the forums.
