Followers AND friends

I've seen multiple instances in the forums where people have suggested changing “followers” into “friends”, but I actually have a different opinion on this situation.

If Person A follows Person B, then Person A shows up in Person B's followers and Person B shows up in Person A's following. At this point in time they are not “friends”
However, if Person B then follows Person A back they both go into each other's “friends” section.

There would be no physical “friend” button

Support or no?

This will still incite the “I am so popular because I have more friends than you” mentality, especially because of the “I'll follow you if you follow me” mentality commonly already in place.

Although if it worked, I would really like this feature.

Yeah I also came up with this idea independently and as such I made a duplicate topic. I need to remember to check next time!

Yeah, this might actually make follow4follows more common
And if people didn't get followed back they might be like “Why are you not following back? Is it because I'm not your friend?”

This will also stop people from saying “699 followers ! Whoop!” When they're following 2000 people. They didn't actually earn those followers , most likely.

Hmm…Maybe you could get a notification when somebody follows you back that says " has followed you back. Become friends?“
And if you clicked yes, it would say ”Please wait until User 2 accepts your friend request"

Or we could do it simpler and add friend requests like Facebook.

I like the confirmation idea along with the original idea.
