Question relating to IP bans.

If you use an extension that is allowed to view your IP (which obviously allows scratch to see) and you use the extension on a public wifi/free network and someone who has used that network previously violated scratch community guidelines (yes ip bans are a thing), this (my opinion) might put your account at risk of being IP banned. Is this true? If this is true (it probably is) why can't the website just say “please use a different network, this network is IP banned” instead of IP banning the person?

Edit: The reason I am asking this is because i am sick of using another browser/profile just to go on scratch. It is very fustrating.

Yeah, it’s the entire network that gets banned.
Only checked during registration, though,
Just make your account in a Starbucks or whatever and you’re good to go.

Scratch has your IP address from the moment you load the home page.

And no, that's usually not how those kinds of bans work.
It's your computer, not the network, that gets blacklisted.

That said, there are plenty of cases where a wide range/mask will be added in order to avoid spoofing (oh noes!).

Here's an example: a senior high I went to used a web proxy (for obvious reasons), so the entire school was permanently banned from uploading projects to Scratch or editing Wikipedia articles.
No, it's the network.

Whether or not you are using an extension shouldn’t matter at all.

The Scratch Team is very unlikely to IP ban you just because you used Scratch on a network that was IP banned. They understand that some IP bans may effect public wifi or even your home internet if the IP address changes.

If you are still concerned, I would recommend asking the ST about this through Contact Us. There is a chance they will actually remove the IP ban, especially if the ban effects your home internet (although it sounds like you are talking about public wifi). Contact Us is at the bottom of every page, but here’s a link: https://scratch.mit.edu/contact-us/

Question relating to IP bans.

I was using scratch on my bus wifi, about to follow someone. scratch was working like normal but seconds later after I pressed the follow button, a notification screen popped up saying “sorry, your network has been banned because it was used to break the community guidelines”. I didn't do anything wrong; if I did, then I would've got a warning from the scratch team. do you think you know why this happened?

thanks, Babaisyou544

Please make a new topic, as this topic is old, and doesn't need a new post. We call this necroposting. To answer your question, someone else on your bus must've been acting wild, and ST can't tell what IPs are for what place.

Well, now that the question is answered, you don't need to, but for future reference, the new topic button on the Questions About Scratch page.
