I was just making some avatars when the connection became insecure on Picrew.me. It's not the 1st time it's happened and I just want people to know, DO NOT download images on an insecure connection! That's how u get viruses! If it happens to go insecure, reload the page immediately until it's secure again. Just wanted to put this out there because ik a lot of Scratchers use it and I want to help people be internet safe. Sorry I didn't really know what category to put this in LOL

an insecure connection does NOT mean you can get a virus from it, it simply means the traffic is not encrypted. theres no need to reload and you can download it without having to worry about getting a virus.

Better safe than sorry. My dad told me the risks on that 1.

They are correct.

Insecure Connection = Not Encrypted
Secure Connection = Encrypted

Though if a website doesn't have a secure connection it must be pretty low effort. If you think a website is sketchy sketch, virus total is a free public resource!

I'm pretty sure you cannot get a virus from an image in any way unless the “”“image”“” is actually an executable/something that can give you viruses with a different file extension (you'd have to change the file extension to run the virus, then) or there's a serious security vulnerability.

I heard there's something with dissonance where there's a fake loading image that actually steals your data

Chrome and most other browsers alert the user if partial insecure content is on the page. This means that when a secure page (over https) loads an insecure image (over http), the browser shows an alert. This does not mean the site is insecure, it just means one or more images could be changed without you knowing since http doesn't have hash checking or encryption.

Well, actually, reloading gets rid of the unsecure image, so if you hate the “insecure site” banner, you can reload (but the image may still be there when it loads again).

When it says insecure, it simply means it's not encrypted and people looking at your WiFi connection can see your traffic and modify the incoming image.
