So, first of all, tone tags/tone indicators are really helpful for some people (like me).

If you don't know what a tone tag is, go to my project

My idea is that there is a little section for tone tags at the end of each comment. I cant use cubeupload so ill try…

Like, so you go type type type, then, you can click on that :::: section in the mockup comment, and input a tone tag or three after the default /

Make sense?? I got the idea from the in-game Beyond-All-Reason chat btw

Sorry for going off-topic (already) why did you replace cubeupload with cubeupl0ad? It's not inappropriate

The forum filter wont get you muted. Only commenting outside of forums will.

I think you can just request them to use them… this won't really make it any easier to put tone tags.

Maybe not, but at least there is a space for them. Like, it will show that ST doesnt mind them, and when the comment is posted, they will be easier to see. (ive found that they a bit hard to see

Tone tags are ridiculous. Either just type them out normally or be more descriptive if you think your tone is unclear.

cool, but I doubt someones gonna add /sar when being sarcastic (kinda defeats the purpose), or /jk when joking (explaining a joke makes it less funi), and if someone was angry I doub't they would have the patience to add a tag to show it

Anyway, I can see this being used to get around the filter.

Let us say “cat” is a slur. Someone could say:
You’re a c | /at
And it wouldn’t be filtered.

You could also say
You’re a good scratcher! | /j
This also isn’t a social media site. I don’t see how comments with tone indicators help people learn to program, or do anything really.

just to point something out, you could stop bypass by having specific set tone tags that you choose from instead of typing ur own

although I agree with ur last statement

What if antic was a bad word? /c is technically a “valid” tone tag. someone could write
anti | /c
and get away with it.

i do think tone tags are helpful as i struggle with online tone, but.. i feel like this in particular is maybe a little unnecessary? it's just going to confuse people and will probably get misused (i can imagine scratchers seeing the tone tag section and just putting something completely random cause they don't know what it's supposed to be). also, not EVERY comment needs a tone tag.

i think it's a lot better to just have them as an optional thing. tone tags are mainly for ND people anyway (including me) and the majority of the scratch userbase is neurotypical 10 year olds

sound kinda unnecessary.
listen, its a great idea. but like. do we need to?
on a site where posting comments is the main purpose like twitter, this makes some sense, but scratch is mostly about coding.
this probably wont even encourage tone tag usage, bc it seems annoying. typing tone tags in a new box???? sounds kinda. over the top.
tone tags are also kinda frightening like due to the mass amount of them, maybe that's just me, but if we are encouraging them to scratch users, which there are a lot, and some are very young, they will most likely not understand or be confused, but that might just be me.
adding on to there being a lot of tone tags, we run into a situation similar to one in the “pronouns in comments” suggestion from a while ago when neopronouns came up. i think it was generally decided that they'd just have an “other” option for neopronouns, but, we cant rlly do that with tone tags. ppl can technically make up their own tone tags just like neopronouns and their is no one list with every single tone tag since ppl can always make more. kinda like dictionaries and words ig.

bit of a rant but

I’m tired of seeing people think they “need” tone indicators. Nobody does. Not even if you’re ND, like me. You can simply explain the tone (or even figure it out) through the actual comment, which makes this suggestion pretty useless. Why use a bunch of Minecraft commands at the end of your comment that nobody knows how to use, and instead actually use a universal method: human speech?

Benefits of tone indicators:
  • Small
  • Prevents a majority of people from understanding the tone (big bad)
Benefits of explaining the tone:
  • Works with Google Translate and similar services
  • Can fit with what you’re saying well rather than feeling awkward
  • Allows anyone with basic reading abilities to understand
Therefore, I do not think this is necessary.

No. Tell me, what does “/skr” mean? You can’t.

sounds like a very specific tone tag that could possibly be understood by those who like whatever shovel knight is.
but like i think you would use /ref for that anyway.
anyway that wasnt really related to my point

….i'm autistic and i quite genuinely do need them pretty often. i misinterpret things extremely easily and me constantly asking for clarification just annoys other people. autism and neurodivergency is a spectrum, different people have different needs. if it wasn't for tone indicators i would constantly be misunderstanding basically everything my online friends say to me in conversation. no, trying to “figure it out” doesn't help, because then i always come to the completely wrong conclusion. i know this because it has happened many times.

in real life i can usually guess tones somewhat well because that's human speech! real life vocal human speech! online text is not the same!!!!!!
i cannot magically rewire my brain to just ✨ magically understand ✨ online tone because it never works.
