All About The Scratch Bitmap Editor

When I first joined scratch I was very confused as to what all the tools do in the editor - so I decided I go over all that here.
Note: This is an ENTIRE overview, you probably know about most of this.
Let's start with the side panel tools

At the top, we have the draw tool.

I'm sure you know what this does - it draws
Down at the bottom of the screen, you have the resize slider. Use this to choose your specific size. The smallest is one fourth of the squares in the editor, the biggest is just a giant circle, I'm not sure how big it is

You can also adjust the color with the color picker in the bottom middle of the screen.

Below that, you have the line tool.
To draw a line, find the place where you want one end, and then click, hold, and drag to the place where you want the other end.

Once again, you can edit the size and color of the line tool
Below that, you have the Rectangle and Ellipse Tool

To draw an ellipse/rectangle, do the same thing you did with the line - click and drag.
Down where the line size slider was, you now have two buttons, one to draw a filled in shape, and one for a wire frame shape.
After that you have the text tool.

Select any place you want text, type what you want, and select enter.
Down below where the line size selector or shape type once was, you have a new set of options.

You can choose any of the six provided fonts - Donegal, Scratch, Helvetica (Default), Gloria, Marker, and Mystery.
Below that, you have the Fill tool.

This tool is a lot more complicated than it looks.
Down in the sub-options area, you now have four types of gradients to select from - Solid, Horizontal, Vertical, and Radial.

You may notice that Horizontal only goes one way - however, this can be changed. In the upper right corner of the paint selector, you have to squares. One has the color you have selected, the other is white.

You can click on the white on, and you will notice that the gradients reverse.

You can now also select a color to replace that white.
Perhaps you don't want to fill something, you want to unfill something.
The editor allows for this too! Simply click on the “color” with the red line through it,

and you can go and unfill a color by clicking on it.
You can also select colors that are not preset by clicking on this

A new color selector with come up, and you can click anywhere to get a color.
You can also adjust the slider at the right to darken or lighten your colors.
Say you want a color you just can't find exactly…
Use this tool

to select and color in your drawing.
Okay, on to the next thing.
Now there is the eraser.

It can be resized just as the paint tool can, but it draws negatively.
After this, you have the Select tool.

Drag your rectangle over any piece of your drawing to single it out and drag it somewhere else.
The last tool is duplicate.

Use this to drag over any rectangle just as before, and then duplicate it and move the new piece around.
That's all for now! I'll add the top tools if I have the time later.

Give him a sticky, GIVE HIM A STICKY!!! Srsly this is quite helpful and the art can be a bit confusing if you've never done anything like it before.

This has been LHP. The dude that makes chiptune music ranging from “Meh” to “Nice” and then puts it in a studio
Do you want somebody to tell you what they think goes into good platformers? No? Well then don't view this project

This is very nice! A better place for permanent instructional articles is the Scratch Wiki - it has the people and the organizational structure to insure that it remains relevant and will be useful for years to come - without taking up forum space:

http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Paint_Editor

It would be awesome if you were to work with them to get your article over there

Rough indeed - and since this appears to be made for Scratch 2.0, it's likely outdated anyway. I'll close the thread.
