i was under the impression that bots were basically just scratchers (or new scratchers) doing actions automatically (through computer programs). in particular, any restrictions that human scratchers have would also apply for bots.

Probably so. I just always got the idea that bots found ways around the systems.

The checkbox one isn't very good either since a robot could be programmed to tick it.

Actually, that Captcha will detect if you use a robot to click it. It does fancy magic stuff to figure out if a human clicked it or a robot. I once failed a checkbox Captcha because my password autofill instantly typed a password about the same time I checked the box.
