Block emails from 10 minute mail services when creating an account

They should block emails when creating an account from a 10 minute mail service because when that email expires you cannot recover that account if you have forgotten your password on it and mostly trolls use 10 minute mail services so the ST cannot track them using their email to their main account.

They could just create a seperate google account right?
Yeah but it’s much harder to make a disposable google account than going onto a 10 min mail website and copying the email. Plus since it’s so hard to create a google account most of the people who do that only make 1 disposable account

They can just make it so that the email verification takes more than 10 mins to come through
Then scratchers that are completely new to the site that created an account would not know why their verification is taking so long to be sent! Some specific 10 min mail services allow you to extend the emails lifetime by another 10 minutes.

How would you even detect what is and isn't a temp-mail?
You could whitelist certain email services like gmail, outlook, iCloud, yahoo, ect, ect.

I agree, 10-minute-mail's purpose is clearly stated, they intend to give out emails so that users can create disposable accounts. Removing this email service would do a favor for anyone who wants to actually use Scratch as they won't be able to use Contact Us with a non-existing email.

How would you even detect what is and isn't a temp-mail, and differentiate from something like someone's personal email server? Honestly I feel like it might be impossible simply because I can't think of any websites that don't allow tempmails.

I agree with this also.

It'll be sweet, sweet, payback against trolls. >:)

On a serious note, this will help the Scratch Team trace their accounts back to their emails, meaning they can take further action against impersonators and trolls pretending to be, or harassing, famous Scratchers.

I won't name such famous Scratchers, as they (the people pretending to be them who I won't name) might be reading these posts behind our very backs!

These 10 minute mail accounts, while anonymous, are also existent for only a few minutes, as its' name implies, meaning trolls and impersonators can own an email for a short amount of time, thus making them unable to have their email banned or something like that.

Okay, so I'm 100% wrong. Well, we make mistakes.

There's no way they block all of them

Good idea. The only problem I can think of is inconvenience. It might also cause some confusion, but the long wait could be specifically mentioned in the email confirmation message.

No, you can't.

maybe they can put a warning in the ‘account created’ notice…idk, i'm just not entirely sure whether it's possible to detect 10min emails.
oh nvm, the 10min mail has an extend time button so this wouldn't work.

15 minute mail
There are probably temp mails services that last more than a full day, and delaying email verification but that much would annoy a good chunk of people

That's true, but this would at least hinder them (assuming this would be possible to implement).

many trolls are not dedicated and just want to annoy a lot of people in a short space of time. implementing this suggestion would do away with this entirely.

You could whitelist certain email services like gmail, outlook, iCloud, yahoo, ect, ect.
How? There's so many email domains out there, it can't just be a simple filter.
  • Don't forget Hotmail, despite the fact that it doesn't really exist anymore; some people still use Hotmail in their email address.

  • When I was in college, my school email ended with umn.edu. You could not look at that email address and immediately deduce that it's a gmail account. Now take that email domain and consider the email domains for all colleges and universities in the United States, and beyond. That's a lot to whitelist and keep track of.

  • When I was in grade school, my school email ended with a .org domain that isn't even an actual website (it says “This site can’t be reached”). I doubt this is the only school where this happens. I don't think that kids should be forced to create a new email just so they can use Scratch, particularly if they are using Scratch for school.

If you actually use hotmail in 2022 then your living under a rock

Instead of doing that you could make your own gmail account! Isn't that amazing?

Then they should tell their parents to make a gmail for them

Sure, but that doesn't mean someone should have to make a new email address.

Sure, but I argue that someone shouldn't have to make a new email address just because they want to use Scratch (especially considering that umn.edu is already a gmail account … what's the point in someone making a new gmail account to work around their existing gmail account?).

Despite making a suggestion about blocking 10-minute emails, you seem to really want to encourage others to make extra email accounts. I encourage you to think of other solutions aside from “Whitelist certain domains and force users to make a new email account.” If someone finds that they must make a new email account for Scratch, they may just not want to join Scratch as a result — precisely because school emails should be recognized as valid email addresses (considering Scratch is mainly an educational platform).

This is all aside from the aforementioned idea that trolls could easily create email addresses using the whitelisted domains, anyway. (How are we sure that most of these trolls are using 10-minute emails, anyway?)
