Autosave needs a turn off feature. Badly.
I agree completely, autosave costed me my entire project which I spent weeks on maybe even months, I didn't have backup copies made either so lesson learned ig.

Just TURN OFF your WIFI LOL

In all seriousness, this would be a good feature, Other than a workaround for a bug.
But KEEP BACKUPS, People!

Autosave needs a “Turn Off” feature NOW. The problem is, the content of costumes containing text sometimes deletes itself without warning. And immediately after, the project saves itself, making the costiume irretrevable. Boom. Gone. Forever. You might have spent DAYS on that costume, and then it's gone forever. It could strike at any time, on any costume containing text.I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues - but please don't shout and jump to conclusions. Is the problem really with Auto-save or is it more the costume bug that is giving you grief?
Have you tried the Undo feature to see if that can restore your missing costume? It's a good feature and it's worked for me with other bugs that have caused the costume to wander off to parts unknown.
Please tell me more about this glitch that makes the costume disappear in the first place…can you give me a set of steps to do to make it happen?
Even without the bug, I believe that some people find autosave annoying. Once i accidentally deleted a part of my sprite and it autosaved immediately after, and i had to redraw the sprite because the undo feature didnt work on it

Autosave needs a “Turn Off” feature NOW.I support the above suggestion, it would be useful in certain situations. I also find it lagging whilst I'm coding and the project autosaves.
EDIT 3: Some ideas to IMPROVE autosave, so I'm not just whining about how you can't turn it off:
Make it only autosave x number of minutes AFTER LAST EDIT. That way it doesn't autosave while I'm editing a costume for more than x minutes. Whenever that happens, it always glitches. It's also annoying when it saves in the middle of taking apart scripts.

Support. I HAT AUTOSAVE if…
Take this Minecraft metaphor…
In Minecraft, if you died in the void you can crash without saving and get your stuff back.
IF it didn't autosave.
Of course, Minecraft won't do that but
Take out Minecraft, put in scratch
Take out died in the void, put in deleted all your stuff
you get

what if you accidentally hit backspace while altering part of a sprite? that would be badThe problem is, the content of costumes containing text sometimes deletes itself without warning. And immediately after, the project saves itself, making the costiume irretrevable.
Ouch! That sounds like a bad bug; I'll make sure it's high priority to fix it.
Assuming that bug were fixed and that there were no other bugs like it, would people still be against autosave? After all, autosave can sometimes prevent you from losing work. It's really the combination of autosave and this other bug that's causing the current problem. If you'd still want to be able to turn off autosave in a bug-free Scratch (ha!), can you explain why?
In some cases, it might help to use the “Revert” command. as Natalie suggests. This command undoes all changes back the point that you first loaded the project page. It's a bit like quitting from Scratch 1.4 without saving your changes. And if you get your project to point where you like what you've got and want to be sure you can revert to that point, you can (a) make sure it's saved (click “Save now” if necessary), then (b) use the browser “reload page” button to reload the project. After that, if you revert, it will restore your project to the point where you reloaded the page.

Autosave could erase all of your work in a few seconds, so I can see how this would be useful. Maybe this could be an option in settings or the editor?

Support. As I'm reading through the various posts in this topic, I see that many people have struggled with this and that they lost a lot of things they created for their projects. I had this issue myself before as well - one time, I just wanted to check up on an unshared project I was working on on my phone in the car (I spent over three hours working on the code for that project, just for context), and you guys know that Scratch on the phone is mediocre, to say the least, so I accidentally deleted the big chunk of code by dragging it into the list of blocks you can use, and I didn't realize it.
Later, when I arrived home, I noticed what had happened, and it could've been prevented if my progress hadn't auto-saved. There really needs to be an option to disable it for a while and just manually use the “save” button yourself. I understand that my story was partially also my fault, as I shouldn't have been so clumsy, but I feel like it could've been easily avoided.
Also, don't worry – I did manage to recreate that code in the night, so nothing was lost in the end, but it was definitely somewhat of an inconvenience to do it all over again.

Bump
This needs to be a real feature. I would keep getting the restore costume sometimes, but after the project saves for me automatically, it completely defeats the purpose of restoring a sprite, so this would help so many users here.

I agree, that is annoying.
We should get the feature to disable autosave.
