You will get by with more using the built in Linux terminal/environment/VM/whatever

Even better, install GalliumOS Linux. It's made for chrome books and runs great on chrome books

Assuming that your CPU has good support.

I can't close my Chromebook's lid, use built-in audio or microphone, use the aux jack, or touchscreen.

that's a driver issue.
is it really that hard to grab and install drivers. Especially when you already have networking

There are no drivers, there are no fixes.

Get a USB with at least 4 gigs of storage and put an Ubuntu ISO on it. Then you can use it to boot Ubuntu and bypass the excessive lockdowns placed on school computers.
Yes, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to do this. One of them is that many schools will force you to use Eclipse as a Java IDE. Eclipse is bloated and very slow so this is obviously a problem. But if you bypass these restrictions you could use an IDE that doesn't lag for 15 seconds when you type a line of code. My favorite is IntelliJ Community Edition.

Not everyone has access to that.

Something I want to put here real quick. A software isn't always slow because of the app itself (although sometimes it can be). If you have a bad computer software can also be slow. On my PC eclipse runs just fine so don't say a software sucks because its bad on your hardware.

Also schools can set BIOS/Bootloader passwords to prevent booting off a USB

That's the problem. When they don't let you use a different OS, just use an emulator. If you can't even run a standalone QEMU binary, use v86. There's always a solution.

Actually, that means they won't work without dev mode… Enable dev mode.
