The whitelist is not what directs people there. If we want to stop advertising it we need to get it taken off this topic, not the whitelist. (I think that is the only place that mentions the hosts, if there are others it could be taken off there as well.

Edit: I just asked about this on the iTopic, so I think we should wait for a response from nXIII first.

Have people even considered the cookies they place on our computers when we load a scratch page with a image on?

Still an advertising monster. I tried uploading a different image 16 times. This was how it played out:

Attempt 1: An ad opened up in a new tab when I wasn't looking! @#$%&!!!!!! I am SICK of tinypic as a host. But I did successfully get an image uploaded.

Attempt 2: Pro-alcoholism ad on the side. I did not have to do a security code this time around, when the ad appeared twice. It was the same one each time.

Attempt 3: The same @#$%&! ad from before. I had to do a security code, but its content was still OK though. I think it was the name of a person.

Attempt 4: Really tinypic? That ad is going to haunt me. It is an alcoholism ad and I am NOT ALCOHOLIC! When it uploaded, the pro-alcoholism ad changed to a pro-milk ad, so that's good. (note that I didn't have any ads open in new tabs when I wasn't looking)

Attempt 5: No problems. Everything was good. Had to do the code, but it was difficult to spell (The New TiVo Roamio - how do you expect me to remember THAT?). But it was successful. One ad had a phone number though.

Attempt 6: No problems at all!

Attempt 7: Now the milk ad is going to haunt me in my sleep. “Best DVR Ever” as the code? Is this site trying to spread propaganda?

Attempt 8: No problems except for the annoying milk ad. Nothing opened in a new tab these last seven times, so yay!

Attempt 9: STOP THE COMPLEX SECURITY CODE! IT HAS THE SAME ONE AS ATTEMPT NUMBER FIVE! AND THE AD! @#$%&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But no problems uploading an image.

Attempt 10: How long do they expect you to see the ad before they change it? GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! But no problems.

Attempt 11: The pro-alcoholism ad returns. At least the security code was “Tivo Roamio” and not “The New Tivo Roamio”. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! But get rid of the alcoholism ad.

Attempt 12: The ad… is white? *5 seconds later* Oh. But at least it's not one of THOSE TWO again. No problems, except for a ridiculously long upload time and the milk ad reappearing at the end.

Attempt 13: “Best DVR Ever”? PROPAGANDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the milk ad. GET OUT OF MY LIFE.

Attempt 14: I got away from my computer screen for a whole minute just to see if the milk ad would go away. And it did! YAY!!!!!!! SCORE ONE FOR HUMANS!!!!!! AND NO SECURITY CODE! YAY! NO PROBLEMS!!!!!!!

Attempt 15: Milk ad is back. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Attempt 16: Just to see if the milk ad would go away, I waited 2 minutes before doing anything on the screen. DID NOT WORK, UNLIKE ATTEMPT FOURTEEN. No problems, but the ads are basically torture.

Tinypic would be a good place if it wasn't such an ADVERTISING MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(And closing tinypic and reopening the URL just shows the alcoholism ad again.)

I clicked one, and it redirected me through multiple advertising shifty agencies; who knows where you end up?! It also opens a new window when uploading, commonly an advert for betting, not something young Scratchers should be enticed to click on.

With some ads you don't have to click them to get a virus from them. Some flash based ads can actually place files on your computer without you knowing, where they can be executed.

Just went to Tinypic's homepage and got this ad for “Free PC Cleaner.” There is also this “featured picture” section and one of the categories says “emo.” Worst of all, using the search bar opened up this new tab from Sheknows.com; a website with innapropriate content for younger children. The website (Tinypic) just looks really shady in general and should not be encouraged on Scratch.

Oh yes. I said this many times, but down with tinypic! The stories I hear from you guys just fuel my hatred for tinypic and make me a stronger supporter of banning the site form the whitelist.

But that's basically expecting all Scratch users to have Adblock whereas many of us don't.

I think BBCode converted to HTML is cached until a post is edited. Emoticons in posts from the beta version of Scratch still try to use images from beta.scratch.mit.edu, so old posts using TinyPic would probably be fine unless they're edited.
