Why don't you use mp3 or wav or something more common straight from the beginning?
You do realise there are very few good youtube to mp3 converters right? If you know any then just tell me - I’m listening.

yea i dont know why Scratch still isnt supporting m4a files when its just about to be 2022 (perhaps it will be like a gift for Xmas, but prob not)! i am trying to upload one of my school music files from Garageband and its not uploading. i am using it for a trailer for my next animation and its just corfundling! (yes i made that word up dont ask but it kinda means confusing and frustrating at the same time)

Sorry for doing something “necro”.Who cares To be fair I'm not sure if Scratch is legally allowed to use the Scratch font either, but that's irrelevantyoutube to mp3 convertersYoutube to mp3 convertersYou know these are not legal?
Support? I guess? You can just use an online or offline converter, but I could see how this could be convenient. I also can't say that this wouldn't take anything to implement, so consider this an “I approve but I don't really care if this is added or not”.

Well on some Youtube to mp3 converters I trust it has an option to convert it to .m4a. I tried it and it converted it so fast. It took about 1 second to convert the youtube video to .m4a. while when I convert it to .mp3 it takes over a minute.So use 2conv.com

support, but you can just use an m4a to mp3 converterit's not really convenient to have to download 2 of the same file in different formats when you could've just uploaded the first one right away

FYI: you can actually upload an M4A file and use it on Scratch.
Since currently the servers doesn't check whether a file's content matches its extension, you can rename an M4A file's extension to MP3, since the Scratch server only checks the file extension (except for SVGs where you could include a script and thus execute a RCE). Don't worry about your browser not being able to read the files; the server sends it in the “application/octet-stream” content type (default for any miscellaneous binary files), not “audio/mp3” or something similar, so your browser have to guess the file format anyway.
(whether or not this oversight will be fixed is up to them)
Regardless, I'd like this feature to be officially supported, since the MP4 file format (that M4A uses) is much more flexible in terms of the codecs it supports. Unlike MP3s which are strictly in MP3, and WAVs which are both lossless and strictly in WAV (and the ADPCM codecs it supports)

I disagree. Under the hood, m4a is very similar to mp3 in a lot of ways, but is also kind of rarely used. That would be like asking scratch to support AIFF just because it also supports WAV, since they're both uncompressed audio. The issue is that most browsers will not play m4a or AIFF files. The reason scratch supports MP3 and WAV is because they are both supported by HTML's <audio> tag.

[pedantic post]
Under the hood, m4a is very similar to mp3 in a lot of ways.Simply untrue. MP3 files:
- only supports 2 audio codecs: MPEG audio layer 2 and layer 3, the former (MP2) being way worse than the ubiquitous MP3;
- has a simple format: header, frame data, header, frame data, header, frame data, …; and
- doesn't have metadata (ID3 tags came in later to provide metadata about the music),
- supports as many audio codecs as the MP4RA allows (raw PCM, MPEG1-3, AAC, Opus,…);
- has a complicated format: files are comprised of atoms/boxes, which has an identifier, size, metadata, and finally data; and
- contains metadata like timestamp, chapters, etc.
The issue is that most browsers will not play m4a or AIFF files.If your browser can open MP4 files, it can open M4A files. They're the same format, just by different names.
