Hello everyone! I've created a game where you can race a little car around a small track (Slot Car Racing). It's not much right now, but I plan to work on it for a bit to improve it and add more features.

I mainly made this thread for discussion, suggestions, bug reports, patch notes and the sharing of Replay Ghost codes! There's more information in the project's description. Here is an example ghost code:

Hello! I checked out the project, it’s really promising so far! Altho one thing, I tried your sample ghost code, and there was no ghost. Maybe look into that?

Suggestions:
-Do NOT show the player their speed, then they would have to eyeball it like in physical slot-car racing.
-Change the ghost code format so that you can double click to insta-select it, rather than having to drag your mouse over the whole thing. Because of this, you won’t be able to share a ghost code properly on mobile, because you cannot select the entire thing.

You might not have activated the ghost fully (first enter the code, then press A to activate), as it works ok for me. I've already got a better version ready for an update.

I'll keep the speed thing in mind, test some stuff out. You can triple click to select the whole thing, but yeah double click would be better and I can change that pretty easily. I might do an update here shortly.

Update 1.1.1 is released! (I messed up the save code change in 1.1 so we're skipping to three 1s.)

-Removed backwards mode
-Ghost replays should now spawn in a more accurate position
-Ghost car is now grey
-Ghost now only drives after the race has started, allowing for you to easily race the ghost. Ghost mode is now toggled, rather than just spawning in a ghost.
-Changed save codes so that they can be double clicked to highlight. Old codes should still work.

I've also updated my original comment's code to match the current version.

I've held off on hiding the speedometer for now, as I feel it would be better to increase the game's quality first.

Oh! I didnt realize you needed to press A to activate the ghost! Maybe change it to just activate upon loading the code? It seems like pressing A is just unnecessary complexity.

Beta 1.2 has been released!
Mostly just bug fixes this time, but I've also redone the artwork for the tracks!

-Ghost car now goes to and points in the correct position when Q is pressed.
-Ghost car no longer stops driving when you have completed 3 laps
-The Enter Save Code text no longer appears at the ghost car
-Entering a new replay code will now reset the ghost’s position to default
-Ghost mode text no longer appears on the Turbo Mode screen
-Updated sprites for all tracks and the finish line

Good job, this looks pretty cool! I have a few ideas and suggestions:

Music, this would make the game more immersive and interesting.
Obstacles/dodging, change the drive control to up arrow and add side-to-side movement. Then you could add obstacles that are randomly generated throughout the map; hitting them would set your speed to 0. This would make the game more fun and difficult.
Save/Load in the menu, simply add buttons for saving and loading into the menu. The lesser controls the player has to remember, the more intuitive and usable the game becomes.
Car color changing, add either a slider that controls the car's color effect or some preset color options.

-I plan on adding both music and sound effects in the future, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
-Dodging obstacles wouldn't really fit with what I'm going for - slot cars can only really move on their own track. There are a few on-track things I plan to add for other courses eventually, but not quite yet.
-Buttons for saving is definitely a better idea than controls, that will come soon.
-I do plan on having different type of cars (which each have there own stats - speed, turning ability, acceleration - that kind of stuff) and also the ability to change your colour.

Unfortunately, that ghost/replay appears to be bugged, as it plays back quite slowly. This should be fixed for new replays in the next update, however old bugged ones won't fix.

Update time! This one took me a while, but it's the biggest update so far (or at least, the one that took the most work). Hope you enjoy!

Beta 1.3 Patch notes:

Additions:
-Added a local multiplayer button
-Added 2 player multiplayer mode
-P1 (Red) drives with space, P2 (blue) drives with left click
-Both players must be holding drive to start the race
-An indicator is shown whether a not a player is ready/holding their button
-Inside turns will be slower than outside turns, to prevent one player from having an advantage (multiplayer only)
-Saving, loading, and enablingGhosts are unavailable in multiplayer
-Buttons for each are greyed out in multiplayer
-Other things to note: There is no timer or lap counter for player 2 yet.
-Added an onscreen ghost toggle, reset race, and menu button
-Menu button brings up more buttons
-Buttons in menu include Save Replay, Download replay, Load replay, Enable Ghost and Back to Main Menu buttons

Changes:
-Car now spawns in a different location. Old replays will still work, however they will not be fully accurate.
-Car now snaps to the track after completing a turn.
-This can be quite noticeable sometimes, and I will attempt to smooth this out in a later update.
-The car now starts turning later - at the same time that it checks for a crash. This may be tweaked later.
-The “Play” button now says “Singleplayer”
-Repositioned the singleplayer button
-Download saved replay code keybind changed to Q
-Restart race keybind changed to R
-Hitboxes shown in debug menu will show when debug menu is on, rather than when X is pressed

Bug fixes:
-Hopefully fixed a bug that caused ghost replays to record replays that contained too many positions and would play back slowly.
-Ghost Mode text no longer shows on the title screen
-Title screen now uses correct backdrop

I've also updated the original message to include an updated save code. Report any bugs or suggestions, and have fun playing!

well, there are a lot of bugs I missed when updating the game… Normally I wouldn't post them here, but there's enough that it can be difficult to read all of them on the game.

-Player 2 can be temporarily stuck when restarting the race
-Car can sometimes start turning immediately and skip part of the course
-Spamming the menu button can cause part of the course to load in the menu
-Player 2 appears for a split second when closing the menu in singleplayer
-Holding drive when restarting starts the timer
-Timer can stop early
-Speedometer doesn't reset when resetting course
-Resetting the race twice while holding drive will make your car stuck (possibly related to bug #1)
-Holding Space and Mouse click when restarting the race in multiplayer says that both players are ready even though they cannot drive
-Holding R while on a turn keeps car at current direction until R is released

I'll update this post when I find more bugs.

-Fixed bug where holding R while on a turn kept car at current direction until R was released
-Spamming the menu button no longer places and keeps a piece of the track in the menu screen
