I've seen quite a lot of posts about the same recent and relevant issues with thumbnails. It looks like these issues have been widespread according to several forum topics about this very issue.


If you are noticing these issues too, it's probably better to add on to one of the already-made topics below, rather than making your own separate one. This will help our discussions remain in one place for each issue. Below, I have a list of issue reports mentioning thumbnails turning into a default image and staying that way. To discuss these issues, click one of the links below.

Project thumbnails show as a Scratch Cat
Profile pictures show as the default avatar
Studio thumbnails show as a default studio logo

These issues have been seen before, but it seems that there was recently a big influx of these issue reports.

According to @cheddargirl, the ST is working on some website updates, and those could make thumbnails and PFPs act a bit strange. And it can be hard work to maintain this large a website and work out the little issues when you're a nonprofit with limited team members and several background tasks, so it may take some time.

I believe these issues are a little different for everyone, even if each one was caused the same way. If someone says their PFP didn't change and instead turned into the default icon, then it's possible you may not notice this problem, even on their PFP, possibly because it was affected on a certain page, some time passed since the issue was reported, or it's simply fine for you. You also may or may not come across all the issues when others are, it's just seemingly inconsistent. I haven't studied to see when and where this is going on though, so this is my best guess.

Don't worry about whether all of your thumbnails are saved, because they are somewhere on the server, just not being shown due to glitches. The thumbnails do eventually get restored.


Note that if some thumbnails load slowly, that's normal for Scratch. This might be happening from general request lag when the server decides to reload thumbnails.


Some of you may be asking to know, what can I do while there are problems with thumbnails? Well, the more traffic there is, the more time it will take the site to do stuff, so one of the things you could do is just take a break and edit on the app. This means you don't have to think about thumbnails at all, as you're not on the Scratch website, and projects will save to your device. You can download projects you want to continue working on, or create new ones from the app.

I also found that it seems to be at certain moments where thumbnails show as default images instead. If you don't want them to stay that way, try opening a thumbnail that is okay and changing the size of it a little bit by adjusting the “_number x number” part of the URL. This will allow you to test load a thumbnail without creating any visible issues. If it's a default, wait a few moments and then try another size. If it loads correctly, you might be successful when loading other thumbnails for the next moment.


Anyway, hopefully this post will catch some people's attention and help sort out the thumbnail/PFP conversations.
