Why does Scratch take your gender when you join?
As most of you might know, Scratch asks your for your gender when you join. It doesn't show up anywhere on your profile, so why does Scratch ask you for it?

I believe that this information, including people's birthdate and location, is used for statistics.

Bragging rights. On the Scratch Foundation website they claim that 45% of users are female, which is pretty important with that whole women in STEM thing.for statsWhat?! How can gender statistics be helpful to the Scratch Team?!

Yes, but it is at least semi inaccurate. I accidently clicked a different option than I meant to when I was registering, and by the time I realized it, the next page was loading and it was too late to change it lol.Bragging rights. It ain't bragging rights until the stats more closely match the known population of females in the world (which is currently 49.5% at the time of this post.Bragging rights. ).But on a serious note, stats are kind of needed to see what the global outreach is like. While the issue of STEM typically having less outreach to females is known, there other factors that come into play, such as estimated age and country of origin. (Other example factors taken into consideration: At what age were males vs females introduced to Scratch? What are the male-female stats like for other countries?)
It would also be interesting to see what the outreach is on users that fall in between the male-female spectrum (though there isn't currently any good world stats on that to do a more proper study). But that's starting to delve off-topic.

STEM feilds have been historically filled with men so women are encouraged to even it out a bit.
