Unicode Emojis Blacklist

On a certain topic, Paddle2See said that he is having a meeting about allowing Unicode Emojis to be added to Scratch. Of course, not every emoji would be suitable, so here are some of the ones that I think, maybe should stay off the website IF Unicode Emojis get added

  • Poo - Would commonly used to say a project is bad, and would be used immaturely
  • American “Peace” Hand Gesture - Is used in the UK, and other countries as a swear
  • Other Swearing Hand Gestures - Pretty obvious
  • Eggplant (and possibly Peach) - Used inappropriately outside of Scratch
  • Swearing Angry Face - Would be used and would encourage ongoing arguments

Please be aware that this is only if the Unicode Emojis are made compatible

Support, but only those unless there are any good reasons why others should be banned. We cannot have children exposed to this horrendous content.

I was thinking there might have to be another, but I won't explain as it isn't suitable for Scratch

I'm pretty sure that the peace sign and the offensive sign in Commonwealth countries are different. The peace sign is the palm facing outwards toward the viewer, while the offensive one is the palm facing inwards. They're different enough that Unicode made a separate symbol – U+1F594 – for that.

I think the poop emoji is fine. It's immature, but so are children, and it's more of a funny haha than anything bad. It could be used to say a project bad, but so can the thumbs down emoji and just words. It's hard to say whether that usage would be common enough to warrant a ban, but there is a report button and that has worked fine.

Maybe the emoji should be blacklisted too? People can get angry and use it.
And the 3-water-dropping emoji should also be blacklisted, same reason as eggplant and peach.

That's the Angry-Swearing emoji I was taking about, and the water dropping, I wasn't even going to mention, because the explanation isn't appropriate for Scratch

Sometimes, Americans do the Peace Sign as the Commonwealth offensive sign, also, I think you're right about poo, I just don't want it to be overused as a silly haha, and not actually funny haha

You could've just said “it's used for inappropriate stuff”

It should be fine since the emoji has the palm outwards.

Yeah, I guess so.

also, this should be like the XXXXXXXXXX censor and not the mute, because accidentally putting one of these in your message and getting muted would be annoying

Yup, maybe if you do it intentionally, multiple times it would lead to a mute

Support! By the way, the banana emoji is used the same way as the eggplant emoji so you might want to have that blacklisted too.

I don't want that blacklisted because
  1. It's not used as often
  2. It would be used more commonly as food than an eggplant

Anyway, support as they are inappropriate. There are some more too that are too inappropriate to even mention.

These should be backlisted for safety on scratch, it’s as simple as that.

Of course we're going to think carefully about what emojis should be blacklisted. Some of them are obviously not okay for Scratch. That is, of course, assuming that we implement support for emojis.

I'm going to close this thread so it doesn't lead to inappropriate discussion. If there is something you think should be blacklisted from comments, please use Contact Us for that rather than publicly discussing it in the forums.
