It wouldn't be better. F4F is going to remain the same. The wording of support makes it seem like more of a commitment, and I assure you, the wording doesn't determine the reality. The reality is that F4F will still be mainly following each other and then forgetting that the other existed.

“Support” sounds like something on Patreon.

Follow — clear, concise. It lets you “follow” someone as they share projects, love other projects, etc.
Support — it gives support to people? I guess it increases a number and shows how many people “support” someone.

Honestly if you think about it this way supporting sounds worse for fame.

It does sound like a promise. If you support someone, it sounds like you are “promising” to agree, defend, and do a bunch of other things that you might not like doing or don't want to do all the time.
Follow doesn't convey an “Oh I agree, there's no way they could be wrong!” vibe.

Followers used to be friends. It was changed to followers in 2.0 I think.

Ehh…the term “I support you.” is usually used when a person is undergoing a hardship. Like, if someone's having a hard time dealing with racism, you'd say “I support you.”
The term followers means “people following a person”. And that is what people do when they follow someone.
No support.
