-ˋˏ✄ Story

The moon’s soft glow brightened the field of flowers in front of her. Her violet hair flew in the breeze as she walked slowly to the top of the hill, the fragrance of flowers surrounding her. It was a beautiful summer night, the stars glimmering like diamonds. As she sat there, Adhira began to name the various constellations she had learned. Orion, Hercules, Taurus. As her eyes bounced around, looking at the stars, she grew a longing. A familiar longing for her father, that would always be greater on this night. 3 years ago today was when… As tears began swelling up, she couldn’t bring herself to think about it. It’s been 3 years and she hasn’t gotten over it. She wiped her tears with her sleeve and looked back up at the sky. Like little white dots sprinkled on a large navy canvas, it was truly a beautiful night. And yet, there was such sorrow in this beauty.

Exactly 3 years ago, it was the same night she last saw her father. They had been discussing the placement of M33 and he got a call. It was strange, once he saw the caller, Dad looked worried, scared even. He went off hastily with apologies. It had also been a bright night. Ira had assumed that he would come back once it was done. But, after more than half an hour, she started to worry. As the sky darkened, she got up from her place at the hill. Ira skipped down the hill to the house. She was met by a surprising hug from Mama. Ira didn’t mind, of course, but it was more of a tight, sorrowful embrace. That wasn’t as surprising as what she would face ahead. As she parted from the hug, she saw wet streaks down her mother’s face.

“Mama,” she said. “Where is Dad?” There was a faraway look in her mother’s eyes before she turned away, seeming ashamed. “Mama,” Ira said again, desperately. “Where is he?”

“Ira. I’m so sorry.” her voice faded out as she began to walk back inside.

“Mama!” Adhira followed, worried. Of all the days, why on her birthday? Where was her dad? What was going on? Questions needing answers filled the girl’s head as she walked inside. She heard Aadrik crying. He was only barely a year old. Her mother had excused herself to her room after making a bottle of baby formula for Rik. Ira got a chair to lift herself up and grabbed the bottle. She went over quietly to Rik and tapped the bottle to the side of his crib. He lowered his cries to a whimper as he crawled towards her. Adhira’s put the bottle down and pulled herself up onto the stool next to the crib. She grabbed the bottle and lowered herself down carefully next to Aadrik.

“Hey, Rik. You hungry?” She held out the bottle in front of her, gesturing for him to take it. He drank happily, while she held onto the bottle. When he stopped, she wiped his mouth with a hankie and set the bottle down next to it. Ira played with Rik for a while before she left to go and see Mama.

She walked up to the door hesitantly. She knocked twice and waited. “Ira? Come in.” a soft voice answered. She walked in through the doorway.

“Mama?” Ira asked, worriedly. “Rik is okay now. What happened?”
“Oh, Adhira. You know that your dad is in the military right?” Mama asked, stroking her hair.

“Yeah! He has some cool medals and a cool uniform!” Adhira was confused. What did that have to do with his disappearance?

“That’s why he is leaving.” Adhira was really confused now. It was normal for him to go every so often. He would always come back. “Adhira. Those were smaller problems. This time-” Her voice cracked and she dabbed the corners of her eyes. “He’s been called out to help in Afghanistan. With the war.” Adhira still didn’t know exactly what he did, but she had a feeling she didn’t want to know.

“Oh.” was all she managed to say before a tear dripped down her face. She wiped it away quickly, determined to be strong for her mother. “It’s okay, Mama.” He had to survive! He just had to!

The next couple of months went by. Grandma Patty had moved in to help out with Rik. She was Mama’s mom. Life went on, as it did whenever Dad went off. The highlight of the month would be when they got a little note from Dad. A glimpse of hope that everything would be okay. By December, it was a normal routine. Except for the letter that changed it all. It was a letter of condolences with some money. Mama was heartbroken, Grandma Patty didn’t know what to do about it, Adhira wept, and Aadrik was confused. Those were days of sorrow and grief.

Even 3 years later, Ira hasn’t fully recovered. No one really did, besides Rik. Rik wouldn’t have remembered. He was only around 1 after all. Ira made it a duty to stargaze, as did her mother to help her. Grandma Patty could just try to understand and be there for them.

Ira got up and walked down the hill to the house. Grandma Patty was at the door waiting, no expecting.

“It’s not just you, my dear. Go to your mother.” Grandma Patty patted her back and pointed the Mama’s room.

Ira walked past Grandma Patty and hopped her way carefully around Rik’s blocks. Rik giggled at the sight, which made her smile. She made her way to the door and knocked. With a shuffle and a sniff, the door opened. Adhira wrapped her arms tightly around her mother, sobbing. They both had a good cry. “It’s okay. It’s going to be okay.” Mama cradled her head. “Shh.” She handed Adhira a tissue from the nightstand. Adhira took it and wiped her tears.”It’ll be all okay in the end.”

-ˋˏ✄ Author’s Note

I hope you enjoyed that short story! I wrote this in like 3-4 hours and lots of spare time thinking about the story. If I win her, I might add on more to her story. This is based on a character that @Aloelove designed. Go check them out! Okay like, not trying to guilt trip, but how are your and @Sakurainq ‘s designs so cute?!?! I wasn’t too attached to it, but I began doodling it a lot! Very, very attached to it now. ;-; Hope that doesn’t backfire on me. Well, I am writing this in the car. Not on Scratch, but yk. I don't really like the narrative style I chose, but I don’t want to fix it I think it's ironic that she comforting her mother, and then her mother is comforting her. I did change some of the info about her along the way, so yeah. I still left out some of the things mentioned in the bio. Like, I didn’t really see a need for her friend in this story, because it's more of a family-based story. Still, this might be one of my best pieces yet! I worked a lot of detail, that I leave out way too much. If you could give me some critiques, that would be awesome! Okay. Bye! <333
