What are the origins of the Scratch characters?

I was looking around my computer through UNIX, and I found this command called nano. nano would open up a text editor and then you can write through your terminal. It also has an alias (I think) called pico.. and of course, when you hear of pico and nano, you think of the two Scratch characters, Pico and Nano!

So. I'm wondering the actual origins of the characters. Where did they come from?

THEORY: Byte Theory
Giga, Tera, Nano, and Pico are all things that come before byte. For example, a giga-byte is 1,000,000,000 bytes, and a tera-byte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. I'm not actually sure how small Nano and Pico bytes are, but I know that they are very small. Unfortunately, this theory doesn't explain Gobo.. or Scratch Cat.

Please explain!

What are the origins of the Scratch characters?

Gobo was randomly named (by natalie, I think) - Scratch was a reference to scratching as a DJ, basically a form of easy creativity.

Please do not necropost?
This looks like it has been resolved already so I think it would count as necroposting
Please refrain from posting on extremely old topics.
Thanks!
