Sorry to interrupt the beautiful conversation, but I am also stuck with some math. I’m currently self-studying Abstract Algebra and we’re doing ruler and compass constructions. I’m trying to prove that a 60-degree angle cannot be trisected using only a ruler and a compass, and I just can’t seem to get it. I even tried using a real ruler and compass to… I dunno… convince myself it’s not possible? I’m not really sure though. I would really appreciate some guidance here!!
Hey @DualPikachu, just wanted to follow up with you on this since everyone else seemed to just ignore you. The basic idea is to show that cos(20) is algebraic over \Q with degree 3, from which you may conclude that cos(20) is not constructible (since the degree of a constructible number is some power of 2). Pretty elementary stuff, really. But anyway, you can show this by setting c = 2cos(20), then using Euler’s formula and trigonometry to find that c^3-3c-1 = 0, so then c is a root of the polynomial x^3-3x-1. This is obviously irreducible in \Q (the proof of which is left as an exercise to the reader), so c has degree 3 over \Q. Thus so does cos(20), and by discussion above, an angle cannot be trisected with only a ruler and compass. I would not stress out too much about this, though. The result is certainly interesting but these silly and trivial ruler-and-compass constructions are not a huge part of what abstract algebra is. Ruler-and-compass constructions are not at all an important part of Abstract Algebra and you don’t need to make sure that you understand it well!

Although we are all adults, we have collectively decided not to share our views on different movies, out of fear of hurting each others’ feelings.

Guys I just wanted to give you an update, I gave my wife some vibrant red tulips and she really loved them! I asked her out on another date and we’re going to a nice restaurant this Friday and then going out to the middle of nowhere to see the stars. We had a conversation about love languages and apparently she really likes small gifts like the flowers, so I guess I’ve learned something new about her! I really appreciate the advice you all gave me, I can’t thank you enough!

Omigosh, congratulations! I only left this thread for a few hours and came back to so much positivity and wholesomeness! All of you really inspire me <3

I wonder how @LuckyLucky7’s extreme racquetball game went with all those other Scratchers.
It didn’t happen yet. He said earlier today (Wednesday) the game is this Sunday. Just because @Za-Chary’s editing our posts for a fictional conversation doesn’t mean time does not exist.
Sorry to say this, but @LuckyLucky7 actually cancelled the game. He realized he didn’t have enough time to play, something about wanting to post as many jokes in online forums as possible before the moderators catch him? Ah, no matter, I’ve already shared my contact information with @fdreerf, @64lu, @samq64, @Harakou, @ScriptTimedOut, and @84375 on Another Platform, and we’re still going to play this Sunday without @LuckyLucky7. The three of you are welcome to join our game of extreme racquetball if you’d like!

Oh hey, I’ve been lurking this thread silently since its creation and just created an account so I can ask you something, haha. You mentioned you have a full-time job? What are your tips for preparing for it? I’m about to start college and I want to start planning.

That’s right! Kinda nice, because you have the freedom to do whatever you want once you leave for the day; no homework to worry about or anything. I usually spend my time playing extreme racquetball. In fact, this Sunday, I’m playing a game with @fdreerf, @64lu, @samq64, @Harakou, @ScriptTimedOut, @84375, @DipLeChip, @gosoccerboy5, and @ScratchCatHELLO. We already set the whole thing up through Another Platform. Feel free to join if you want! Anyway, about your advice, just kinda chill, dude. Get a decent GPA and a relevant college degree, set yourself up for an internship… you know… routine stuff. Ask others about their experiences, and with plenty of hard work, certainly you can become a successful industry worker! I actually work full-time as a McDonald’s fry cook, so I’m probably not going to be very helpful, but I’m sure there are others here with more impressive jobs than me.

Hey! I think it’s really cool that you work full-time at McDonald’s. It’s my dream to work in fast food, and I’m doing my best to make sure I can realize that dream!

Do you ever realize just how fast time seems to go by? I remember being a kid and thinking it took forever to get from one year to the next (I was mostly just excited about Halloween every year). Meanwhile, I felt like I was just starting to calm down from the excitement that last Halloween brought, and it’s already March?!?! Man, life goes by faster than I had ever thought.

I feel the same way, man. I try not to think about it too much, though. If I ever start silently freaking out, I just go and drink some water. That usually calms me down regardless of what’s troubling me. It’s a healthy habit to get into, too. Just keep on drinking water, and… Be moist

Just live in the moment, sometimes it’s not healthy to worry about the future or obsess about the past. You are you, right now, and you can change the future. The past is out of your control, and… heck, in fact, the past doesn’t even exist. No need to worry about it. Just retain what you have learned and you’ll be okay. We all will.

I’m just really proud of everyone here for sharing their problems and feelings, good things and bad things. As a society I feel like we don’t talk about these things, and when we do, it’s not really in a serious setting. Definitely continue talking to people, especially those in real life around you, about the good and the bad. Reach out. Those you love you will definitely want to help.

Yeah, about that, I just wanted to say (just so everyone sees it) that you always have someone to talk to. There are so many people willing to listen, if all you need to do is talk. Just reach out to friends, family… they’d be happy to help. My feelings of anxiety have definitely diminished after I’ve talked to someone about them. Reaching out is scary but it’s so worth it in the end!

Yeah, I definitely feel terrible sometimes due to my back issues (you might remember my song from a couple of pages ago). Well, I still haven’t mustered up the courage to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor, but I’ll keep trying!

You got this!!! One step at a time, just start by looking at your options, think about it carefully… even if you don’t schedule an appointment for another month, that’s okay, as long as you tried! Sometimes your best is all you can do, and your best doesn’t have to be 100%.

Hey everyone! I’m incredibly delighted that you all decided to take this opportunity to talk to each other about positive things, instead of writing joke spam everywhere on this thread. It’s fantastic that we all got to hear stories about your adult lives! As an adult myself, you inspire me and make me look forward to the rest of my life! I can only hope that our younger users look at this thread and get ideas about how they can make the most of their lives. With that, I have to close this thread because April Fools’ Day is over at this time.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta send @Harakou an alert with my phone number in it. He beat me pretty badly in a one-on-one game of extreme racquetball a few years back, and I’m going to take this opportunity to ask him for a rematch this Saturday.
