what does sb3 mean
when you download a scratch project as a file to your computer it outputs a .sb3 file.
recently i realized that its probably an acronym for something and i have no idea what it stands for.
i think that the s stands for scratch and that theres a 3 because were using scratch 3.0 right now, just like it used to be a .sb2 file a few years ago when it was still scratch 2.0.
but what does the b stand for?

what does sb3 mean
I will safely assume that its “Scratch Build 3”, as it is the third build-version of the Scratch Offline Editor.

I read somewhere a while ago that it stood for “Scratch Blocks”, but I don't remember where it was.

psst I read somewhere a while ago that it stood for “Scratch Blocks”, but I don't remember where it was.
when you download a scratch project as a file to your computer it outputs a .sb3 file. They aren't talking about the Scratch Blocks plugin (correct me if I read that wrong), so (as I said above), its probably Scratch Build 3

what about sprites? they are also using the third build-version of the Scratch Editor, but are not sb3 files. I will safely assume that its “Scratch Build 3”
they are sprite3 files or something.

You did. I was indeed talking about the .sb extension and all of its derivatives - thus, .sb3 stands for “Scratch Blocks (version) 3”. (correct me if I read that wrong)

what does sb3 mean
I went to a lot of file extension websites, but they all just say “it's for Scratch 3.0”
It's safe to assume it means “blocks” or “build”

what does sb3 mean
they are talking about the normal scratch project file format. i do think it is more likely it stands for “scratch blocks” however, because the file format stores the blocks and their data of the project, and not the actual script/build of the project, which “scratch build” would imply.psst I read somewhere a while ago that it stood for “Scratch Blocks”, but I don't remember where it was.when you download a scratch project as a file to your computer it outputs a .sb3 file. They aren't talking about the Scratch Blocks plugin (correct me if I read that wrong), so (as I said above), its probably Scratch Build 3

what does sb3 mean
It probably doesn't mean “Scratch Build” because old versions of Scratch used just “.sb”, without a number.

what does sb3 mean
It's a file for scratch projects made in 3.0. If you tried importing a 3.0 project into 1.4, it won't work because it's not a sb1.
Files for 2.0 projects are sb2
1.4's version is sb1
Files for 2.0 projects are sb2
1.4's version is sb1

what does sb3 mean
This is correct. The number at the end indicates the version of Scratch that was used to create the project. .sb, .sb2, and .sb3 files are compatible with Scratch 1.x, 2.0, and 3.0 respectively. i think that the s stands for scratch and that theres a 3 because were using scratch 3.0 right now, just like it used to be a .sb2 file a few years ago when it was still scratch 2.0.
As for what it stands for, I found this old thread from the early days of Scratch 2.0 where someone asked the very same question. Multiple people there agreed it was Scratch Blocks, citing an old Facebook post made by the Scratch Team. Nobody linked to the post and I can't find it anywhere, so you should probably take this with a grain of salt.

I remembered when I search the forum, actually, SB3 stands for Scratch Binary 3.0.
See:
Scratch
Binary
3.0
SB2 stands for Scratch Binary 2.0
SB stands for Scratch Binary (how can Scratch find a suitable place for file formats?? Two letters??)

It means “Scratch Binary 3”.
Fun fact: Early betas of Scratch used “.scratch” instead of “.sb”.
