Welcome to Scratch!

Hey, new scratchers! If you're just beginning scratch, this guide is for you.

Profile

Your first step to becoming a big and awesome scratcher is to click your profile.

In the top right, you should see your username. Click it. A drop down box will appear. You'll want to click Profile.

A page should appear that shows your username and the default profile, a blue cat.

That is Scratch Cat, Scratch's well-known mascot.

You should see an About Me section, so click the box below it. Type something in, like I like pizza, or I am a good friend, or something like that. Don't enter private information. That could result badly.

When you're done, Click the box below What I'm working on. In here, type my first project!!

Your First Project!

Next to your name in the top right, there is a folder icon with an “S” on it. This button takes you to My stuff.
In My stuff, click the button that says Create Project.

After your new project loads, you will see a big box on one side with a cat in it, and on the other you will see many building blocks with text on them. These are called Code blocks. They are the things that tell objects to do something.

Learn more about code blocks using places online, or ask a friend.

Tips and Tricks

When you're done coding your project, click View project page in the top center. This will take you to the page your program will live in after you publish. If your parent has not accepted the confirmation email yet, do that now.

In the text box under Instructions, type what your game is about, or animation, and how to use it. In Notes and Credits, type hashtags and then words that describe your project. If your project was a game where a cupcake gets stolen, type these things: #adventure #cupcake #game and
other things. This will help you become more popular on the website. This might take a while before you get views, but it'll be fine. Near the top, click the orange button that says Share. Another trick is to put an @ symbol and then somebody's username, like your friends' username. Don't put random scratcher's names in. Publish more projects, get better at coding, and stay on the website awhile and you might actually become popular!

Welcome to Scratch!

It's great you want to help out with a guide! However, there's already a lot of guides, and not really a good way to showcase them all. Please feel free to welcome new folks by responding to their introduction topics - or on the group welcoming topic.

There are other ways to help out in the forums too! Helpful users are always welcome (and appreciated) in the "Help with Scripts“ and ”Questions about Scratch" sections.

Finally, a really good place for Scratch guides is the Scratch Wiki. I would highly suggest checking it out and see if it's something you'd be interested in. They have a good number of articles and guides - and could definitely use the help of more contributors for improving them!

This is more or less correct. I don't want to be discouraging, but organization is important on the forums. There are plenty of other ways you can help out, though.
