Who created Scratch, and why?

@mres created Scratch for children to learn to program.

adding on, some believe that @andresmh created scratch due to the fact that andresmh joined a day before mres, but it could be that it was almost midnight when andresmh created an account, and past midnight when mres created an account.

Well, @mres did create Scratch. I believe he was working with @andresmh on Scratch at the time, probably with several others. Making Scratch was not an individual accomplishment — it was a team effort.
