the reason we use * and / for multiplication and division is because all the other symbols aren't on the keyboard, but since scratch isn't text based why not add them
Full support. The reason why new scratchers rarely use the math blocks is because they are unfamiliar with how they are presented to them.

Or maybe it's because operators are mostly used in complex projects and mathy projects, which new scratchers tend not to create.

but they aren't going to magically learn what they are when they do need to make complex projects

They can experiment with the blocks. Do you not expect them to be curious about what different blocks do?

Asterisk and slash are used in every other programming language. For an introductory language, covertly teaching users learning programming for the first time the proper symbols is pretty logical.
it might be easier to understand since kids are more familiar with ×, ⋅, and ÷ and not * and /, also whoever or whatever teaches them to code in a different coding language will probably tell the * and / are multiplication and division and I think they will catch on pretty quick since there aren't any ×, ⋅, ÷ keys to accidentally type
You make a great point. It looks so strange when new users go on, so support!

If I where a teacher of computer science and they added this, I would avoid scratch as it teaches the wrong operators.

Snap! uses the “×” character for multiplication, and it's used by teachers of computer science.

people tend to stay away from things they don't understand

Faxs.

when I joined scratch, I actually avoided blocks in operators and sensing as I did not understand them.

Oh, and what was one of the blocks? the * and / blocks.

Why? I did not understand them at all.

maybe there could be an option for this?

Maybe, if you right-click it it can change back to * and /

Adding too many settings isn't a good idea.

I think an easy way to solve everybody's problem is to have the ability to know what a block does when you hover over it.

Something like this existed in 2.0, where if you right-clicked a block and clicked that one suggestion, it would show you what that block does.

yes, that's how I learned what / means

hehe yeah, I avoided the abs block because I didn't know what that was, with all the advanced-looking options. I tried looking at the 2.0 tips menu (one thing the ST should really add back, it gave descriptions for each block. Not that I ever used it other than that once.) and it didn't tell me anything helpful for those operators (tips isn't a math class XD), so I thought “okay those are probably things I'll learn in more advanced math classes in the future,” and I left it. Even later when I learned about absolute value I had no idea “abs” meant absolute value, it just sounded so weird imo XP (still does a bit) ..I just recently realized what it was XP

This wasn't the same for the 4 basic operations though, since as I said earlier I thought they were obvious :P

Oh yeah I forgot about that. That and the tips menu.

Once they need to use those blocks, don't you think they would look for them? And that's the most obvious place for them to be, next to the other arithmetic blocks.

necroposts don't exist in suggestions as long as it's constructive.
i don't think yours is constructive but it could be counted as a bump.

It was a joke, it was just a bump.
