A way it could work is to have it as a project setting, and make 4:3 a default for every project. That way enabling + backwards compatibility is 99% ok.

I agree. I have a laptop and a monitor. Both screens are widescreen. And also, 4:3 is very old. Scratch should have a selector where you can choose between 4:3 and 16:9. It has NO sense that you cannot do that.

No support. It doesn't make sense, I would only support if the resolution was actually custom, like enter any integer width and height.

Yeah! I agree too. These days most of the monitors are widescreen(16:9) so I think there should be an option between 4:3(640x480) and 16:9(1280x720)
Oh and 16:9 should be HD

no offense but, stretching the screen can make it ugly, but on the other hand, not stretching the screen but getting rid of the borders can help us look out of bounds, this is probably why the borders are here

There'll be trouble on existing projects, and there are devices without widescreen support.
You can look out for Scratch mods that have 1920x1080 support, i think…
