Completely unsubstantiated mind you, but it's certainly a plausible reason.

Wait what.

I'm pretty sure that it's because they want their number to be as far away from Windows 8 as possible.

They would have been better off with Windows Platinum or Windows Gold.

Also, I heard that if Microsoft knew how to count, Windows 8 would be Windows 6.2.
