If you still want to hear audio from other sources on your computer, you can just mute the specific tab that the project resides in. There aren't that many browsers that don't have this feature.
(To mute a tab, just right click on it and click “mute tab” or “mute site”, depending on your browser.)

Edit: Just realized this thread is close to 5 years old. This is still relevant, though, so I doubt it qualifies as necroposting.

Support, sometimes I am listening to my playlist, which is on Scratch. I can only ‘Mute Site’ which mutes the playlist too.

When I click the other project's green flag, kaboom! Music I am not particular to and I have to quickly click the stop sign, stop the playlist, and then finally mute Scratch and endure the silence in semi-agony.

TL;DR, This is necessary for me and many games that have sound lack a mute button.

Support. They had this in 2.0 and its super useful as I’m often listening to something else when on scratch. A lot of projects have sound but no mute button which is really annoying.

Can't you just right-click on a tab and select mute? It works on chrome, edge, and firefox, the browsers that most will use.

However, there's still the issue for other browsers that may not have this, in which case you can just mute your entire computer.

When you mute one tab on scratch, it mutes the other ones as well.
