The dictionary links topics so you learn other perspectives, which is valuable when you don't understand the FAQ answers. The FAQ gives you one, straightforward answer based off of what has been said, and valuable if you don't understand the dictionary answers.

Why not just link to topics in the FAQ?

My theory is that a FaQ is just that… frequently asked questions, and it answers them right there on the topic. A QaS dictionary allows you to see a more variety of questions, that may or not be answered.

I think it's kind of pointless to have both. An FAQ also doesn't make sense if you don't know what is being frequently asked — that's why I like the Question Dictionary more, because it links topics to questions that people actually asked. But I do like the descriptions found in the FAQ, because they give quick and clear answers. The Question Dictionary, on the other hand, omits the details, which can be good for the sake of not letting the topic get too long.

I agree with @cheddargirl that merging the two topics might not be the solution. I would sooner support having a “collaborative sticky,” but that already has its issues, as it requires two users to be active rather than one. I think someone who knows for 100% fact that they can maintain such a sticky, and knows that they aren't leaving Scratch any time soon, should just take over a “merged” version of the sticky, the OP having a list of links with descriptions, and the post afterward having a concise list of topics (or vice versa). Similar to the list of rejected suggestions, I suppose.

Thanks for bringing this up, though — I think we could definitely reduce the number of stickies everywhere in the forums.

I'm going to be hesitant about this one. If it weren't for the Suggestions Directory I'd gladly take the offer, but I don't know just how much work it will be to maintain it in the future once it's in a fairly complete state. Plus, as of now, I'm basically using my entire free time working on it (please somebody help me with it), so I don't think I'll say yes right now. I'll just have to wait and see, which might waste time for everybody else.

I'm willing to let someone else take this job, because merging the two will probably be a lot of work. However, if no one else wants it, I can merge them.

I've been sitting around for about three days and it seems like no one wants it. If no one wants it by tomorrow, I'll gladly go ahead and do it. However, if someone else wants it, now is the time to speak up.
