I think it is a good update, but why would the comment count be removed? The project comments are still there, so what is special about project comments?

I agree. I don't like that they did it to the follower, probably so people don't compete with each other , but the profile comments was pointless >

Hmm…. removing of numbers associating with comments, followers, etc… I'm not quite sure I agree with that.

maybe. but the reason was that following followers and comments have a meaning and that people would not focus on the numbers. Proof? Here.
