Is there any chance of making Undertale in Scratch?
Hi! I was today wondering if there is any chance of making Undertale in Scratch. I might sound crazy, of course you can't! but is there a chance to make it? and what is the limit of coding in Scratch?

There isn't an exact “limit” of coding in Scratch, even with the 5 MB project.json limit and the 10 MB asset limit. It's certainly possible, though it would require some jumping through hoops to make it work.

You actually can (sort of)! Search up “undertale simple battle creator”—a Scratcher built a simple engine for creating UNDERTALE battles.
CLARIFICATION: When I made this post, I was under the assumption that they meant recreating individual fights.

There was also a project (which I believe is taken down now for unknown reasons) that re-created the entire first portion of the Ruins, 99% accurate, so it's possible but would take months/years

There isn't an exact “coding limit,” like fdreerf said. While it may be hard, it certainly is possible to make a pretty much exact version of Undertale on Scratch. But there may be issues with sharing the project.
Undertale is a teen E 10+ (I swear it was rated teen? Did the rating change or something lol?) game, due to blood, violence, tobacco references, and language. So if you want to share it, perhaps toning down the violence, not putting any blood, removing the bad language, and getting rid of the cigars.
And also, I doubt this would a problem, because Toby Fox is pretty chill, but it is also a possibility the game would be taken down due to copyright. I mean, it IS an almost exact recreation of Undertale that anyone can play for free. And it has happened before.

ESRB says “Rated T for Fantasy Violence, Mild Animated Blood, Mild Language, Use of Tobacco, Crude Humor, and Mild Suggestive Themes”, so I don't think you can make the whole game but there are projects for individual fights (although those are much easier compared to the videos).

I believe you saw a comment thread on the Undertale Wiki instead of the official ESRB rating.

You would have to make sure everything is entirely scratch friendly though (I haven't played undertale but quickly did some googling) so you may chooose to sensor elements or cut parts also you would probably have to make it in parts if you hit the limit

there isnt a code limit, but there is a byte limit, plus scratch is a basic coding platform, so i suggest using python or java to make it

yes, theoretically.
people have made little bits and pieces from Undertale, so you could string them altogether.. but, people have different coding styles, so it might to hard to do so.

Yes but actually no.
First of all, it's totally illegal and uploading it would get scratch sued and you tracked down and sent to court, so no no DONT THINK ABOUT IT. Theoretically though, yes. However, it would likely take an experienced programmer more or less 3-5 years since scratch is not suitable for large scale projects. Assuming you're 9-14 and have 1-3 years of scratch experience, if you want to recreate it go ahead, you'll likely be done in your mid-twenties to early-thirties if you haven't decided to give up midway. Oh, yeah and by then the FBI would probably know and there's a chance you'd go to jail for like 3-12 months or something with minor charges ask your lawyer. The good thing is that if he didn't decide to ruin your life since you made a heavy blow on his career, Toby Fox would probably hire you and he's pretty rich from what I know.

While this scenario does seem blown out of proportion, there is a very valid point about legality and time. Don't forget file sizes! Yes but actually no.

Other things to address:
Scratch is meant to be appropriate for all ages. And UNDERTALE has some elements that are basically distilled nightmare fuel. *cough cough* Photoshop Flowey, the True Lab, and the entirety of the genocide route *cough cough* The game was rated E10+ for a reason. However, small parts of Undertale are totally doable, if you have decent programming skills.

ok, toby fox might not kill you but it is appropriate to say that it would take someone like you a decade or two to finish recreating undertale on scratch. On another engine, probably less. While this scenario does seem blown out of proportion, there is a very valid point about legality and time. Don't forget file sizes! (insert over 9000 IQ speech here)

A json file can handle like 300 gb and undertake is like 350mb so uh yeah, file size is no biggie

Actually, scratch has a limit for the project size. Tho yeah, it would take a long time to make it, less if you manage to put together a team of amazing programmers and maybe pray that the Almighty Griffpatch will decide that he wants to join.ok, toby fox might not kill you but it is appropriate to say that it would take someone like you a decade or two to finish recreating undertale on scratch. I suggest programming it with GML using the GameMaker Studio 2 engine. Undertale actually was made using GameMaker Studio, and Deltarune with GameMaker Studio 2, so it only makes sense to use them. plus scratch is a basic coding platform, so i suggest using python or java to make it

argh I wish this could happen- theres copyright and stuff so sadly you can't… it IS possible to make a Alternate Universe game though, but it might take a while (estimated time: 1 to 3 yrs)
