I attempted to read Crime and Punishment, but I mean, that book is as dry as a salty cracker when your dehydrated in the middle of the desert and it's a drought.

while it is dense, it's probably just a bit above your reading level

a raisin in the sun for required reading and also the great gatsby
a raisin in the sun is pretty good but the great gatsby is really dense and the characters are all jerks
the jazz age doesn't seem that bad

the sort-of mise-en-scene in a story is vital to creating the mood, establishing things that will contribute to a reader's opinion on or reaction to a certain event, character, what have you.I read at a high school level reading level, it just seemed like it had a lot of unnecessary information. I guess everyone has their own opinion.I attempted to read Crime and Punishment, but I mean, that book is as dry as a salty cracker when your dehydrated in the middle of the desert and it's a drought.no

take Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. (which I think is 9th grade required reading?) this is one of my favorite books because of the little tidbits of philosophy & figurative language that are thrown in at just the right moments to make the story poetic and vibrant. I love it. it starts by saying “Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board.”
