Ban Memes/Phrases/Etc Intended To Mock/Make Fun Of Disabled People
Well, you replied to that post, it's good to see you're still active on your own topic. For a moment there I thought you had just given up on replying to people's posts.Okay, so we should ban the phrase “Potatoes are the best” because some people don't like potatoes and it would be insulting. That’s nowhere near what I’m saying.
Mental diseases/disorders/etc are NOT the same as things you like or dislike. Opinions can change, but your brain can’t just go “oh I don’t have autism anymore”.

Anyway, while you're here, do you think you can reply to some of these posts? You haven't seem to commented on them, I don't think, and it would be good to hear what you have to say, since you're the OP and all.

I don't use this and I don't know anyone who does, but I think there are a lot of people out there who do use these terms that aren't aware of the context and origin of why that term is used.

A meme gets popular, and if you refer to it, it't referring to the meme. Over time, the correlation between the meme and the reference to it is blurred. After even more time, people may not even realize that it's a reference to a meme.
Ban Memes/Phrases/Etc Intended To Mock/Make Fun Of Disabled PeopleI think part of the issue here is what “intended to” really means.
-snip-
If it's being used to purposely make fun of disabled people, then isn't it already banned?
-snip-
It also saysThat's not even the complete sentence. It ends with “however it is intended to represent the unique croak produced by several species of frogs when agitated.”The expression is often associated with the Autistic Screeching meme
Oh! And also, I'm going to reply to this
:So I suppose I need to explain the problem with misusing the word trigger, at least with me.Okay, that may be a problem in real life when someone is playing a high pitched sound on their phone or something, but I don't think that's really a problem on Scratch. If there are any high pitched sounds on Scratch, you can always stop the project or mute your device. But what I really don't understand is why you would say, “high pitched noises are very triggering”. I mean, you can't blame anyone for thinking you meant the joke version. And, why do you use the word, ”trigger(ed)“ anyway? You can easily say something like, ”High pitched noises hurt my ears,“ or, ”High pitched noises put me into a somewhat state of shock, please don't play them," and that certainly gets your point across with only a couple more words, at least I would say so.
Because of people frequently using trigger/ed as a joke, if something actually triggers me people will think I mean it jokingly. I could say “high pitched noises are very triggering” and people might think it’s a joke and not take it seriously and still make high pitched noises. The problem is high pitched noises genuinely are triggering for me and my body goes into shock (I don’t know if “into shock” is the right word for it, I don’t know how to describe it. But it’s not a good feeling). The point is, that certain noises are a trigger for me and because of the phrase being used jokingly people might not understand when someone has a REAL trigger.

I understand your point.
I think that's where tone comes in. While you can't “speak seriously”or on Scratch (you're not speaking, nobody can hear how you intended it), people can still understand from your comment. If it is “i'M tRiGgErEd aHhHhHHH,” someone can assume that you're joking. If you say “Loud noises trigger me and cause my body to go into a sort of shock,” it would be understood that you're being serious.

I don't agree with what Red said, because if someone feels comfortable doing it on Scratch they'd do it in real life too, where you couldn't turn down the volume or anything. If people on Scratch were made aware of this issue they could spread it to people off Scratch, which would help.
I also think that this is part of what the post says - because people use the joke version they can't say the real version, and while they can't blame people for not understanding they can teach people about it.
This being said, I don't think it should be banned, considering the fact that it would be hard to tell and people don't use it purposely to make fun of others and make their life harder.
However, I do think that an announcement addressing this could be beneficial, as people would be aware of the fact that the word is misused, and that if someone says it seriously they shouldn't be ignored.
Those are just my thoughts.

I had go into this thread to clear out a bunch of spam and insensitive posts. Please be respectful and constructive when commenting.I think it should be made a bit more clear in the community guidelines, as simply “abilities” might sound like how good you are at making art, coding, etc. Maybe replace abilities with “skill level” or “talent”, then add “disabilities or disorders” (I hate that word by the way but unfortunately that's the only proper term for it as of now)

Ok. No no no no no no no no
So apparently, you're attempting to take absolutely innocent expressions and turn them into insults in favour of a certain demographic of people.
I fail to see how these are offensive. The “reeeee” expression is normally used without malice. These days it's mostly used to express exasperation or annoyance at something (e.g. “reeeee i died”), similar to how some other people use “e”, “a”, “eeeeeeee”, or “aaaaaaaaa”.
For “triggered”, it's also primarily used to express anger to the point of ranting. Yes, I know officially it means “an emotional reaction related to something tragic prior in life” but at this point it's the way the words are used that define them.
I absolutely agree with banning these terms if deliberately used to offend, but when just used as expressions I see no harm.

I think we all have been ignoring a word that hasn't been filtered out AT ALL.
*.
Yes, you can still say this word. I made a thread about it and I was redirected here. I put some resources on this.
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/440229/
Also I agree. “REEEEEEEEEEEEE” Isn't really used in malace, although Triggered shouldn't be used as much. Maybe if you say the meaning?
What we should focus on is making the filter get rid of this word.

As someone who has ASD 1 (the weakest type of autism luckily), i dont find the word “Reeeee” insulting in the Slightest, so i dont think it should be banned, because Some (like 10) people use it to insult ppl with autism/mental handicaps, while the rest dont use it as a insult
(also yes i did make a scratch account just to talk about this lol)

Hmmm I'm not entirely sure how much I support. Now, I am not on the spectrum, but I do have ADHD and probably some other issues (not gonna self diagnose lmao-)
Now, I can see how ‘reee’ can be offensive, but it's not me who has autism or who can feel offended for the kid who it may or may not have been mocking (I'm sure a bit has stemmed from that) so… In other words, I don't think I'm qualified to talk about the ‘reee’
As for the triggered, 100% support. I HATE IT when someone says, ‘So and so is so triggered!’ When they're just experiencing a basic human emotion to something entirely reasonable (like, you are super loud and someone tells you to shut up) Being triggered in the correct context is saying, “That inflicts an emotion or state to which it wouldn't for most” I get triggered about small things that spike my anger. And these are things that wouldn't effect most. Like, someone moving on from a topic in conversation too quickly, being asked to do a responsibility of mine, and many more which will start to make me sound overreactive. And I see how these may make some angry, but these legitimately spike my anger, or trigger me. That is a trigger. Getting mad at someone for being loud 24/7 isn't a trigger. I think that language needs to be seriously corrected, since it waters down and undermines people who actually get triggers and voice their issues.
Trigger def: “When someone is triggered, it means that they're having a strong, uncomfortable emotional reaction to a stimulus that wouldn't ordinarily cause that response. While triggered, people may panic, feel overwhelmed, cry, act out, withdraw, or react defensively.”

No support (as someone on the spectrum). Like others have said ALL THE WAY BACK IN 2020, the main focus of the meme is not to make fun of autistic people, but rather because frogs tend to make a “reeeee”-like sound

As far as I know, there aren't many other popular memes these days that are offensive to races/ethnicities/people of certain disorders/etc.

That's probably not offensive enough to be banned, even to people who live in Ohio, and it's not really as relevant as it was almost two years agoAs far as I know, there aren't many other popular memes these days that are offensive to races/ethnicities/people of certain disorders/etc.The ohio meme exists, just saying…

I have autism and I can handle being made fun of just fine, but I'm sick of people walking on eggshells around me, coddling me, or trying to sugarcoat my own disorder to my face. It's extremely offensive and dehumanizing, and if there's anything the Scratch Team should ban, it should be that instead of meaningless phrases like “triggered” or “REEEEE”.
