it has happened to me before many times, the least you can do is to, 1(direct approach), ask the closer friend why he doesn't want you to hang out with the less closer friend or, 2(indirect approach), ask the less closer friend if he or she has had bad history between the less close one and the close one.

I've tried both, 1. he just hates him for a complicated incident where he claims the other friend got him into trouble, 2. the less closer one wants to make it up and says it's a misunderstanding

I’m bad at giving this type of advice but I like to point something out that you said. “Plus, real friends don’t call each other dumb” my friend group we call each other dumb all the time. XD
Ok I’ll try to give some advice while I’m responding to this topic.
The closer friend said “Your so dumb I don’t know what to say” real friends don’t say you’re dumb in that kind of way.
I say you might want to get the less closer friend and the closer friend in a room and talk it out. Once they agreed on the situation you can let them out.
