s2online: Easily run Scratch 2.0 projects in your web browser!

This seems like a good idea, but 2.0 made MAPs and I think that the scratch team are against those.

I'm pretty sure that's not actually true – after all, the ST member ceebee once made a MAP (Everybody Wants to be Famous MAP). Yeah, Scratch 3.0 doesn't have proper audio editing tools, but that's just because they couldn't get that implemented on time for release. For the last few weeks, actually, they've been working on a proper sound editor, which they just merged – that means it will probably (although not guaranteedly, but probably) be released the next time Scratch has an update (within a few weeks from today probably).

Edit: Today, apparently! According to thisandagain's profile.

Sorry it doesn't work for you. There's not exactly any real way for me to make a new or better version, sooo, sorry.

Best I can suggest is to install Flash and make sure it's enabled for s2online.github.io, but I don't really have a lot of experience with doing that. You'd have to look up tutorials online (“install flash”, “whitelist flash”, etc).

No, you will be able to, even if your browser will try to disable it. There will always be a way to run Flash.

thank you!

see my comments on my profile, obviously. here they are quoted

hmm… well, there's no way to run Scratch 2.0 without flash; that's sort of just a matter of fact thing. it's programmed in flash, so without flash, it just doesn't work. my suggestion is honestly to start using scratch 3.0 more, because it's the version which the ST is going to continue to support and add features to… that said, if you want to keep using 2.0, as long as you have flash, you'll be able to use s2online.

it's true that come december 2020, flash isn't going to be supported by adobe; buuut this doesn't necessarily mean it will stop working on your computer. — actually, um, scratch that, honestly I didn't know but I just looked it up and apparently both chrome and firefox are going to literally remove support for flash in 2020-2021? that's a bit surprising honestly. there's not a whole lot I can suggest for you, then, unfortunately…

…besides getting used to 3.0. oh, if you have a supporting computer (mac/windows), you can download scratch 2.0 desktop - https://scratch.mit.edu/download/scratch2 - which should continue working forever, and is basically the same as s2online otherwise (since it saves files to your computer's hard drive just like s2online). that's probably your best long-term option. or you could try 1.4 if you like!

Hello,

I know this sounds a bit far-fetched, but could you make a version of this with 16:9 support? Like the one that the @sheep_maker made here. It might be tough to implement since it is Scratch 2.0 and it is Flash, though, so tell me if it can't be done.

its definitely technically doable! i believe youd only need to tweak a few variables in the source code to make it work – im pretty sure people have made 16:9 mods of 2.0 before. that said… i dont think it would mesh that well with the basic concepts of s2online, i.e. being a tool to quickly open and edit existing 2.0 projects using the editor in which they were created. suppose i made an option which lets s2online show a 16:9 screen instead of 4:3 – well, then it could open existing projects and show them as though they were widescreen. but the problem is… theyre not! youd always get projects which target a 4:3 screen, so they probably wouldnt work properly here.

and, of course… you cant make projects that target a 16:9 screen and run them in s2online (or a mod of it), because if you do that and upload them to the scratch site, theyll just be sb3 files. hypothetically – assuming the save/load mechanics (still) work, which really isnt guaranteed – you could make them in s2online, but you wouldnt have anywhere to host them; uploading them to scratch would make them sb3, and thus not openable in s2online. (i suppose you technically could open them in sheep_makers tool, but… relying on two distinct forks of different major versions of scratch with potential compatibility differences seems like a bit of a hacky solution. )

of course you could argue that if you just give the sb2 file to someone then they can upload it into the 16:9 version of s2online, but… well… then you dont have s2online anymore at all! you just have an ordinary 16:9 scratch mod thats hosted on github pages. which could be useful, yeah, but its kinda a big project i dont really want to work on myself, since flash is pretty soon (like…two days from now, max? chorme and firefox arent supporting them past december 2020!) and it isnt really a unique project or one id have much use for personally.

sorry this boils down to just an extended no! that saaaid youre totally welcome to fork s2online and hack around with the code yourself! ive dealt with a bunch of weird bugs in attempting to make this a useful tool, so its probably a decent base for mods.

if youre interested in doing that, feel free to ask here if you get stuck on any part of setting up or coding any sort of mod! even though i dont plan on making something like this myself, im very much happy to help other folx with code stuffs.

Hello,

As I have no experience in forking (or GitHub, for that matter), could you explain to me how I can make my own version of this? If I were to do this myself, I would want to have a web site like yours.

Or could you at least upload this version of it on a separate website? There's a 16:9 version I've found on another forum post that I've linked. It does the thing I want but I don't know how to make a website like you have done here.

Thanks for the help!

ok i tried

i dont think the costume editor works and i havent really tested this yet, buuuuuut: https://towerofnix.github.io/s169online/index.html

i was going to use that mod but it didnt run properly thanks to like, dumb code stuffs. to fix that id have to have edited it in a flash decompiler, which is kind of a pain, and it wouldnt have any of the code updates that my existing library does, so just forked my own code and searched for mentions of 480x360 (etc), changing them to 1280x720. the stage is in small-mode by default because otherwise its huge

as for forking, if you wanted to mess with this youd just have to have a github account and click fork on the github page for s2online! then youd have your own fork, which you could push code to (just clone/set it as the origin instead of the original repository). as for making it into a site, just go into your fork-repositorys settings and search for “GitHub Pages”; set it to the master branch and (assuming youre pushing to that branch) it should work fine. just make sure your commits include the rebuilt swf. i definitely cant explain how to use git in general if youre not experienced with that, but thats the gist of getting your own mod site based on s2online!

Thanks for doing this!

Okay, so I've been having this issue with the project that you have currently uploaded online. I've tried digging into the source code of your project to find a fix for this issue, to no avail. Basically, the issue I'm having is that when you go into full-screen mode, the really thinborder line at the bottom looks surrounding the stage looks like it has been cut off and is not showing; is there any fix for this?

Also, I was wondering how you got the stage x and y axis to say numbers above (-)480? I really wanted to do this myself but couldn't figure it out…

Thanks for the help!

no problem! i…doubt theres any fix, it sounds like an issue with the way it scales the screen. honestly if this were a proper mod which i wanted to spend a lot of time on, i think it would help if the whole fullscreen system were restructured a bit – right now on my 1920x1080 screen going into fullscreen actually makes the project bar (with the green flag and exit fullscreen button) go out of my screens visible area, so i had to put my browser into fullscreen and hide its navigation bar to just exit fullscreen! so im thinking it would be cool if the stage filled up the whole browser window, with a black background around the stage if the window isnt a 16:9 ratio, and the project bar would only show up when hovering in one of the corners or something. that would make it like a real fullscreen game! but obviously thats a heck of a tonne of work so i dont have any plans to work on it…itd be neat though

as for the x/y values i think youll want to modify these lines! they include the specific boundaries and offset numbers to convert a normal (0 -> STAGEW, 0 -> STAGEH) coordinate into one that scratch can use (-240 -> 240, -180 -> 180 – unless you change the number literals in that function).

s2online is a Scratch 2.0 mod made so that it could be easy to run and test existing Scratch 2.0 projects inside the 2.0 editor. It makes use of the code written for MegaApuTurkUltra's Scratch Project Backup, interacting with the scratch-flash editor to send downloaded project data into the editor.
The sprite chooser doesn't work And all online Scratch Mods that replicate Scratch 2.0 need Adobe Flash Player, so all of them will probably not work anymore by the end of December 2020!
