Well first, listen to the audio that you are animating to, and get a feeling for the vibe/beat/style. Do you think the song would go well with a colorful character, or should it be greyscale? Is it fast-paced and would need clean transitions, or is it slow, and should just be smooth, slow animations?
When you've gotten a feeling for it, figure out what you want the animation to do; maybe make a sketch-out, or just write down what you want to happen. Then, start to animate!
Animating takes a lot of practice; it will take a lot of trial and error to make the animation on time, clean, and natural-looking.
