people probably love platformers so much because if they're good, they took a lot of code.
the thing is , they don't take a lot of code they are too easy to make, I can make one in half-hour
Maybe you can, but some beginners can't.
When I think about it, you're right. Real beginners don't know how to download and upload engines. /s
ikr I only learnt about backpacking like when I had been doing scratch for a some time

agreed.
generic platformers are just plain boring. i mean, if spikes=yes cube player=yes lava=yes grass floor=yes THEN IT IS A GENERIC PLATFORMER

That's actually not a precise formula, I would consider my platformer to be kinda non-generic, just because of the way it works.

Well… I'm working on a platformer right now, not backpacking any scripts from anyone… Although did lift the main sprite from an old game!

Hopefully it won't be described as a generic platformer…. The Link is in my signature if you're interested.

And the worst thing, that thing that makes me the most unhappy is the fact that when you write something like
Sorry, but this is really not a good platformer. It's just a generic one with scripts backpacked from griffpatch and the level design is pretty poor. Your game doesn't even have jumppads and such games get top loved ….
you'll get replies like
DONT BE MEAN
but also like
Sorry, but don't you see how much effort was put into this? You're just jealous because you can't do it yourself.

Yeah, it's kind of infuriating, but some people, especially New Scratchers, may want to start doing platformers. But, I think that's kind of? constructive feedback to a project, and I wouldn't say it was mean if you rephrased it a little like “I wish this platformer should be more unique and less generic.”, then you wouldn't get a lot of hate comments from other people.
As always, report any comments that you see that are not polite.

Some people don't know what generic platformers are.

I would say its because scratch likes to engourage platformers as peoples first project, imo all platformers should be marked NFE
But what about my Sonic the Hedgehog fangame?! It's definitely not “generic”!

1. Advertisment
“LOVE MY PROJECT AND YOU GET 3 FOLLOWS!”
Show and tell forums
studios
(which is against the guidelines )
2. Making a studio dedicated to only that project and inviting all their followers

I really don't know, but some people do ask their friends to love-it

no, because if you use something like genesis and change the charachters, that's meant to be remixed.
did you code it yourself?

Is using a tutorial considered “generic?” Because what if you are new to scratch and aren't that good at it yet? When I moved from Roblox to here i was a bit confused learning a new programming language
although i had already done scratch for quite a while

Well, if I had copied the collision detection in my platformer, it still wouldn't be generic, but that adds up. Generic more or less just means “not impressive”. I would call it generic if someone would use the scripts of an awesome 3d platformer and then make some new, crappy levels for it.

Like using an engine? Because that's what engines are for.

i think they get top loved because if you have enough followers they'll love, favorite, and view your project.

Even if it's nothing, if your *quote unquote* famous, they'll love, favourite, and remix anything you do.

It's sorta sad, as scratch isn't about fame and everyone should get a chance to be top loved. even if they aren't “famous”

Yes. Would you impressed seeing that someone has created a 3d game? I think so. But would you still be impressed if it was just a 3d engine downloaded? I don't really think so. Or at least that will kinda remove one of the reasons why I like some scratch games: The program. Now, if the mentioned 3d game would use an engine, but would be a game like Sam & Max Season One, then you would still be blown away. The gameplay aspect. But those generic platformers often have boring level design.

we should stop whining, because fame on scratch won't go away.

@jaguar1501 Calling a generic platformer generic definitely isn't mean, although it isn't constructive.
It is actually pretty judgmental and unconstructive. Seems to me that there is a bit of elitism going on here.

Remember that the top loved and top remixed rows are pretty much entirely just about popularity - not about “quality”, however you want to define that. Or diversity. Or anything else. I remember when hamster drawings were all the rage and all over the front page. It was a fad - it came and went. See what you can do to make the next big thing rather than grousing about the fickle focus of the teaming crowds.

Also remember that what might be easy for you is not necessarily easy for somebody else.

I think we've answered this question pretty well now. They are there because that is what “the populace” wants - they make them popular. It's unfortunate that they don't align with what you find exciting - but that's just the way Scratch is at the moment. I suggest you move on and look for things more tailored to your interests - see what your friends are loving and viewing and adding to studios.
