Onion Skins and Scratch
I've used onion skins, or layers for animations before, and it makes animating easier. You can do something similar to layers on Scratch bitmap editor by duplicating the costume, using the fill tool to turn it red, or any color you want, and trace over it with black, if you filled it with black, trace it with white.

They have an issue open for this with “feature” and “needs-design” labels.
In Scratch 3, this could There might be a workaround, though…sort of work with a clone, if a sprite costume in the editor and on stage appeared exactly the same, in particular during all times of the editing process.

tbh before I got Autodesk Sketchbook, this was how I onion skinned, it's just as effective

work around:
copy the frame, paste it on the orginial position, then set the orginial to any color (also change the outlines)

Support! This would be really useful for animations.

@xRyeunMigsx ‘s way to still use it is correct, and there really isn’t a need when we can solve it like that.

Onion Skins and Scratch
I played around with blocks and this works for me
Please credit if used though. Note: It may not work for you, it's still in the testing stages!
IMPORTANT: When creating the onion skinning custom block make sure to check the “run without screen refresh” box!
define “set onion-skinning to (number input)% opacity”
switch costume to “costume number - 1”
set “ghost” effect to “100 - (number input)”
stamp
next costume
set “ghost” effect to 0
(separate script:)
when “green flag” pressed
erase all
(separate script)
when “space” key pressed
erase all
set onion-skinning to (number input)% opacity
Press space key once you move onto your next frame! Please credit me if used :)

Onion Skins and Scratch
My question is simple (so sorry if someone already asked about this). Will Scratch ever add onion skins? If they did, that would be so awesome XD lol…just saying. You should be able to turn it on and off. For those who don't know what an onion skin is, it's the option to show a ghost image of the previous costume on the drawing screen, without it actually being part of that costume. It's very useful for animation. I've tried to use Pencil and import files into Scratch, but it never seems to work, the formatting is weird, etc. I'm not trying to ask too much, but this addition would make a huge difference to me.
Thanks for listening,
~Luki
I was just talking about that! YES I WOULD LOVE THAT!

It would help animating. I use Adobe Animate more for that reason

There could be a button in the edit menu of the project editor. (e.g.To avoid confusion. Why? This would be cool. However, I think you should only be able to use this feature once you earn the full Scratcher status.
and then
)

Onion Skins and Scratch
I feel like onion skins would be more rewarding to have them versus not introducing them. It doesn't have to have onion transparency or keyframes and hold frames, just a simple “flip-book” addition to the program would be great. Not just for animators, but for game-makers and other Scratchers as well.
For a long while, I could only animate on Scratch (my parents were reluctant to download animation programs for me at the time). If only onion skins were introduced in my time, I would've taken off with animation so much faster than the discouraging “red-erase-blue” technique I was doing (and what most other animators on scratch are doing too) which was in fact, MUCH harder and much more time consuming than regular onion skin.
I fully support this idea!
