Wiki Wednesday, June 24, 2020
Today we have a very special edition for everyone as this is Wiki Wednesday - 50th edition. For this special occasion we wish to put our editors front and center. We furthermore invite you - yes you - to join our wonderful community as a Wikian.
In addition to our regular program we have included OP-eds from leadership and testimonials from Wikians to celebrate our community.
Without further ado, here are the Wiki Articles of the Month:
English: Gobo
Gobo is a sprite that comes with all installations of Scratch. Gobo was named by Scratch Team member Natalie Rusk.
French (français): Créer un projet de bienvenue
Tu veux rejoindre le studio “Scratch Welcoming Committee” en créant un projet de bienvenue pour les nouveaux Scratcheurs? Voici comment faire !
Türkçe (Turkish): Scratch Ekibi
Scratch nasıl böyle kötü şeylerden uzak? Scratch'in moderatörleri, Scratch Ekibi ile tanışın!
OP-Ed: Extending Creative Thinking via the Scratch Wiki
by makethebrainhappy, Director of Public Relations for the International Scratch Wikis and English Wiki Administrator
Within a historical moment there are typically two moments: place and time. The physical location is the monument later generations pass through. They are the handprints that the future wonders at. The time refers to when the events unfold. Both are necessary to create a legacy.
In a humble sense the Wiki provides the opportunity for both in a meaningful way. As a service the Wiki extends learning through our extensive documentation and comprehensive tutorials. Nearly five million users across nearly a dozen languages take advantage of this service. But 99% of our users don’t see the place and time. Their interaction lasts as long as they stay on the page.
In terms of place the Wiki has its own markup language, over 1700 articles online and an extensive MediaWiki documentation system. The entire environment is conducive to learning web languages like HTML/CSS while improving upon your Scratch knowledge through tutorial writing. You can track contributions, views, and changes over space and time - exhilarating.
However the moment feels incomplete if the site were an empty vessel of history. Our most valuable source of strength are the Wikians and contributors who make new edits every single. Whether debating, changing or writing the community provides a vibrant mosaic that you can interact with.
So join us in time and place: https://en.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Scratch_Wiki:Become_a_contributor
OP-Ed: Tips for Project-Oriented Design Thinking
by smrman, French Wiki Administrator
Picking the right idea is in my humble opinion a key part of every project. This will be what makes you go forward with the project. It might be something related to one of your other hobbies, something you like doing, or maybe something you could benefit from - like a program to keep track what book you have in your bookshelf at home. Just make sure not to pick something too complicated. Realize you do not know everything, even if you think you do. Try not to get fooled.
Once you know what you want to achieve, it is then time to think of ways to complete it. The language you use doesn’t really matter nowadays. Pick one you like and you master. If you do not know any, search for someone who could guide you like a mentor.
After that, make the list of problems you think you will face when working on your project. Split the bigger problems in many smaller ones, and find a solution for each of them. This is not a big of a deal if you are stuck on one part. You still can ask for help online or to other people you know. How would they tackle this problem? What would they do? Asking for help is not something you should be ashamed of. In fact, most of the programmers often google the problems they face. This is something very common.
You might as well do something else in the meantime and come back at it later. And at night, just before falling asleep, the solution to the problem you have been stuck on for the whole afternoon, will pop off inside your head. This happens more often than you might think.
One last tip: share from time to time what you have made with others, even if they are not into programming. Listen to their feedback. How did they envision it? What would they change? What would they add? In the end, you won’t be the only person using what you’ve created, will you? And don’t we all want to help by making things better?
Wiki Testimonials: My Favorite Wiki Edit
Respondents were asked to name their favorite Wiki edit
garnetluvcookie, English Wikian: My favourite Wiki edit was probably the time I edited a bunch of stubs with actually good content in it, not just rushed, 5 minute content. I had a lot of fun doing that, and I want to do it again!
ahmetlii, English and Turkish Wikian: My favourite edit is “hmmst'd've's (the pulp free orange juice with extra pulp that crash-landed into my basement and said banana)”. It was funny. Also, it's a good example for that Scratch and Scratch Wiki are same, we're not writing “only” boring contexts. Also, we're (as Scratchers in Scratch Wiki) writing for Scratchers. There has funny and helpful things. We're trying to helpful for everyone because this wiki is written by Scratchers for Scratchers. That's the main task.
Groko13, English Wikian: I love editing for the Wiki because I get to share my knowledge about Scratch and help other people find information that they need. Also, I've learned a lot of new things about Scratch while working on and reading the Wiki articles. Being a Wikian is a great way to give back to the Scratch community, and it's a lot of fun working with people from around the world, whether it's working on a large project or page, or just making some smaller changes to an article. The Scratch Wiki community is really nice and helpful as well.
bigpuppy, English Experienced Wikian: I don't think I have a favorite edit, because it's all of the edits by every Wikian all coming together that make the Scratch Wiki what it is. If you're looking for a way to help out in the Scratch community, the wiki is a great place for you! You'll get better at collaborating, researching, and writing. Editing the wiki is fun, too! We have a wonderful community that's very welcoming and would be delighted to answer any questions you have. If you're interested in joining, just follow the instructions here: https://en.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/S:CONTRIB We're excited to meet you and see your contributions!
kenny2scratch, English Bureaucrat: Honestly I don't have single edits that I like - I like the grind of looking through recent changes, and making follow-up edits if necessary. It was also nice to become EW to sort of formalize that process
What is the Scratch Wiki?
The Scratch Wiki is a collaboratively-written wiki available for free that provides information about the Scratch programming language and its website, history, and phenomena surrounding it. The wiki is supported by the Scratch Team, but is primarily written by Scratchers. The Scratch Wiki is a popular source of information for scripts and tutorials, and it continues to grow as Scratchers use it as their primary source of information. This could also include advanced articles for Scratchers around the world to build, share, and see.

There are many languages which do not have a Scratch Wiki! If you know a language without a Wiki, then you can help create one. Learn more here! We are looking for native speakers in a certain language and do not require any applicants to have a perfect grasp on the English language.

It’s finally here! (and I am a wiki editor…)
Also, the hmmst’d’ve’s edits only happened on the English Wiki’s sandbox, and the flag icons are not working right now.
