Apple - or android - doesn't like any app that can be used to look at and change code, so they removed the Scratch app from their store, and the Scratch app was dropped. ScratchJr is simple enough that it's not considered code.

It is actually that you can't download code, which, at the time was something essential to how Scratch worked.

In case you're interested, here's a recent image of a mockup of Scratch on a tablet: Twitter Post

And here's a Wiki page about an HTML5 player, which can be used on a tablet: Scratch on Tablets (Wiki)

Scratch Jr. ipad app

For some reason my recorded sounds are not playing on the Scratch Jr app - I'm working with my 5 year old on this and the inability to produce sounds is kid of frustrating.

Has anyone else encountered this or have some insight?

Thanks

There is no Scratch App but if you are willing to spend money there is a browser called Puffin that enables so you can used it scratch on your tablet. I've used and I personally think it's great and I can make and play games when I'm not on my computer and instead on my iPad. (This sounds so much like advertising…It's not)

I would like to point out that only Apple has removed an older Scratch app from their App Store, for “emulating code,” which apparently isn't allowed (classic Apple I would say). They even go as far as to ban GBA emulators, which is really annoying because they have to be hosted elsewhere.
Android does not have any ridiculous restrictions on code emulation, or even root apps (yay!), all of which are allowed on the Play Store. If the ST made an Android app, it would be allowed.

Apparently scratch jr is simple enough not to be considered emulation by Apple.

I'm a Microsoft guy, I don't really like to use Apple Products.

I'm having the same problem. I can record sounds and they play back fine in the little “record” window but not as part of a jigsaw sequence. Any help would be very gratefully received!

Scratch Jr. is supposed to have a Sound Record block but mine doesn't. In the sound blocks bar, all it has is the Pop block. I'm using an iPad 3. Is there some place to find a better copy I can install instead of this one from the app store?

Please don't necropost. Also, record is an option along with pop in Scratch Jr.

I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the term necropost. I know that record is supposed to be an option in Scratch Jr. I've seen the screenshots showing a Record block next to the Pop block. However, my copy of Scratch doesn't have that block. I've installed Pyonkee, which seems to,have the same functionality as Scratch 1.4 which I have on my Xubuntuu installations and on the Raspberry Pi which I'm going to start using with students this Sunday. (I'd love to use 2.0 on the Raspberry Pi, but the workaround I found in one of the linux forums is beyond me.) But the closer I can keep to the standard Scratch look and functionality across platforms, the easier it will be since I'll be teaching elementary school age kids in Japan, some of whome know essentially NO English.

Again, I'm sorry if I violated some protocol, but if anyone can tell me how to get Scratch Jr. to record sounds without a Record block, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The general rule is, don't post on topics older than 2 weeks unless you have relevant or new information to add. It's better to start your own topic, especially if what you're posting is not too relevant to the original topic.

Don't worry, necroposts happen a lot, even in the more experienced community. Next time just keep Scratch forum customs in mind though.

Hi, WeissSensei
Simply say you cannot record sound without sound block.
It's puzzling your ScratchJr doesn't have record block.
Could you upload screenshot of sound category?
And if you can speak Japanese, we can move to Japanese forum.

Best,
Kazuhiro Abe

I got it.
You might turn off Microphone access of Privacy menu of Settings.
If so, the record block is disappeared from ScratchJr.
