Problems with importing transparent PNGs

I'm sorry if this has been discussed previously - I've searched the posts and have ended up going in circles with the topics leading nowhere

My son is using Photoshop to create accurate cut out images (why can't you do this in Scratch??) with transparent backgrounds. They are PNG files - with transparent checkered backgrounds ( I know how to use these on web sites / photoshop etc!)

When we import into Scratch - the checkered background is imported as a solid pattern - not transparent!

Is there a setting I'm missing?

All the posts I found just keep repeating that it works… but it doesn't for us

thanks,
Peter.

Are you using the offline scratch editor? In the offline editor I think there's still a feature for importing as well as uploading. Try uploading your costumes (top left of costume window) instead of importing, that might solve the problem.

Problems with importing transparent PNGs

Can you confirm that the images are transparent in a different image editor or viewer?

Sometimes, they aren't actually transparent. It has nothing to do with Scratch.

Problems with importing transparent PNGs

hmmm…. still getting nowhere with this

Yes, they are transparent. I can use them on a website or photoshop file - the background is transparent

Really starting to give up a bit as the Scratch editor doesn't have a decent magic wand tool - so you can't do accurate cut outs…. and the imported PNGs are not transparent

Any ideas anyone at all????

I promise you - they ARE transparent!

I don't know what to tell you to prevent it from happening, but I can tell you how to easily solve it. When upload a picture, it will automatically be in bitmap, which is the only place it works in. Click the fill tool (the spilling paint bucket) and then click the dropdown next to the purple color. Then click that red diagonal line, this fills it in transparent. Click the background where you want it to be transparent, and it should work.

My description sucks, so I made a guide here.
