Scratch Jr. ~ Pros, Cons, Glitches, and Suggestions!

When I downloaded Scratch Jr, I was very disappointed. the capabilities of Scratch Jr are very limited. Here are some suggestions for Scratch Jr.

Suggestions

Paint Editor:

Needs an eraser tool, a straight line tool, and a text tool.

Data

Need Variables and Lists!

Control

Needs a forever loop designed like the loop block. Also, needs a wait until block.

Motion

Move Forward __ steps block needed. Also, a point in direction __ block.

Sensing

Tilt sensor would be a great feature for the Scratch Jr, even better than the webcam integration in Scratch 2.0. Every iPad has a tilt sensor, but how many computers have webcams? A webcam integration in Scratch Jr wouldn't be a problem because all iPads have cameras too. Also, there should be a touching sprite ____? block, instead of the touching any sprite block.

Triggering

There should be a When page flipped to block.

Sprites

We need costumes!

My Projects Page

Ask “Are you sure” when you delete a project.

Another suggestion would be to be able to post share your projects via File Sharing on iTunes.

Glitches

The fill tool in the Paint is very buggy. It doesn't always fill anything and sometimes it will fill too much. For example, I made two squares. A big one, and a smaller one. The smaller one is inside the larger one and is not touching the larger one at all. I want to fill the smaller square, so I click the fill button and then click the inside of the smaller square, and it ends up filling the entire larger square and the smaller one.

Pros

A big advantage in Scratch Jr is the page flips. It is very helpful when you want to have a start menu, help page, a tutorial, etc in your game. I think that this should definitely be implemented into Scratch 2.x.
Another good feature I like in Scratch Jr. is the undo/redo buttons in the scripting area. I think this should also bee in Scratch.
Cons

The cons are all the suggestions.

I know Scratch Jr. was made for 5-7 year olds so the Developers wanted to keep it simple, but Scratch was made for a young audience too and yet in the Scratch Statistics most Scratchers are 11-14 years of age. If the developers want to keep Scratch Jr. simple, I suggest a new app be made that does have all of these things.

Has anybody else experienced any glitches in Scratch Jr.? What is your opinion of Scratch Jr.? Do you have any other suggestions that should be added to this list?

Thanks for reading,

Scratch Jr. ~ Pros, Cons, Glitches, and Suggestions!

To all the suggestions: Do you expect little kids will want that? Things like that can be complicated for them.
To the cons: Remember that ScratchJr is not a mobile Scratch, like you say that should be a different app, but it can't be for iOS since they don't allow it. I was thinking Windows.

What do you mean Scratch Jr. is not a mobile Scratch? It is a on a mobile device. It's not the same program as Scratch but it would be nice if it had some of the same features. Why can't they make another app for iOS? I've heard that Apple doesn't allow apps that interpret code, but they let Scratch Jr stay on the app store. Do you mean the windows app store? Like for windows phones/tablets.etc?

He/she means that it is not meant to be Scratch for mobile devices.

It is made by the same developers of Scratch. Called Scratch Jr. I know it is not the same thing as Scratch but why can't it be used for some of the same things as Scratch? All I'm saying is that in my opinion, Scratch Jr. would be better if it had some more features that are also in Scratch. Okay, as I'm writing this I see your point. I still have my opinion though and I would definitely like to see some more sensing blocks to make Scratch Jr. more interactive. (especially for young kids) There is nothing more accomplishing then seeing a crab walk on the bottom of the ocean because you figured out all by yourself how to program it to walk when you tap it. Or shake it. Or speak. I'm sure everybody has felt this when they programmed their first “Hello World” program.

They are making a separate Scratch for mobile devices separate from scratch jr.

Is it an app or just HTML5?

Do you know when it will be released? And on what platform?

I forgot to add The undo/redo button in the scripts area to the list of Pros. I also think this would be a great feature in Scratch too.

Yeah, Scratch needs that instead of “undelete.”

With all your suggestions, Scratch Jr would basically be Scratch with a different look.

No I mean in the scripts area. If , for example, you accidentally hit delete instead of duplicate when programming your project, you can hit undo to make the blocks that you just deleted go back.

That's what undelete does, but it really needs undo and redo instead of undelete anyway.

Is it in the scripts area? I haven't even noticed it was in the scripts area. In my stuff I know there is an undelete project?

Oh yeah, you're right. But they should have an undo/redo button instead.

Apple doesn't allow programming apps? Then how did Hopscotch slip through? (Hopscotch is like Scratch, but on the iPad)

The reason Scratch Jr is allowed is because it's more of a game than a programming language. I don't know what hopscotch is , but I'm guessing it falls under the same principles.
