Scratch 1.4 is still 32-bit, and doesn't work on macOS Catalina.
Scratch 1.4 is 32-bit, and has been since its inception. However, now that we've had 64-bit compatibility in macOS for over 14 years, since the release of macOS Tiger in 2004, and Scratch 1.4 has been available for over 12 years, since its public release in 2007, it seems strange that it wasn't compiled to be 64-bit in the first place. I know it's now very old, and was retired to a compatibility solution in 2013, when Scratch 2 was released, and its purpose is becoming less useful over time as a higher proportion of projects are made in Scratch 2 or 3, but if you still have the source code, please recompile a 64-bit version, so that it runs on new Macs with macOS Catalina.
Also, for those who use Macs and want to know which other apps are 32-bit and won't run in macOS Catalina, I've found Go64 to be very useful. It's free, and as well as scanning apps (like macOS's System Report, as explained in this support article), it lets you also view the websites of all of these apps, search the web for them at the click of a button, and count up the cost of upgrading to newer versions with a running total. I encourage you to use it, to check and replace crucial apps where necessary.
Edit: All Macs released within the last 14 months have Catalina or Big Sur pre-installed, “just don't update” isn't a solution.

I don't think the ST will recompile any of the Scratch 1.x builds such as Scratch 1.4 to 64-bit, since what the ST seems to do with legacy versions of Scratch is that they provide download links for them, but don't support it in pretty much every other way, such as updating to add new features. I think the company most at fault is Apple, since they've decided to cut support for any 32-bit programs, yet Windows and many Linux distros can still run 32-bit programs on their latest versions.

But Apple explained their reasoning, that removing compatibility would help it to run faster, as well as removing the need to make every new feature compatible with 32-bit apps. They gave 2 years warning. How is this not enough? *Snip.*

I don't think it was so much a matter of it not being enough time, but more that the Scratch Team just didn't see it as a high enough priority to make a 64-bit version of Scratch 1.4 for Macs. In the two years leading up to now, Scratch 2 was already on it's way out, so I think most attention was diverted to development, release and bug fixing of Scratch 3.But Apple explained their reasoning, that removing compatibility would help it to run faster, as well as removing the need to make every new feature compatible with 32-bit apps. I use a Mac OS Mojave and I am totally updating, tbh I don’t even use 1.4 that often, but yeah 1.4 should be 64 bit.

Scratch 3 should be compatible with 1.4 projects, I think. No, but losing compatibility with legacy projects isn't good.

I use Catalina and yeah, the 50% of my apps went bye-bye.
If you wanna play 1.4 projects, upload your 1.4 project into 2.0, export it, and then import the 2.0 file into 3.0. It should work.

32-bit is dead. 1.4 is also dead. If you need 1.4 then I would suggest running the Linux version in a virtual machine.

Scratch 1.4 is still 32-bit, and doesn't work on macOS Catalina.
Here is why Scratch 1.4 doesn't work on MacOS Catalina and newer:
As of MacOS Catalina, Apple completely RIPPED out support for 32-bit apps, so I recommend if you haven't updated your Mac from Mojave or older, don't upgrade to Catalina if you want to keep 1.4

https://github.com/LLK/Scratch_1.4That'd be impossible!
Maybe you could try compiling it yourself? This is the source code.
