¿What is a Shoot 'em up?
Acording to Wikipedia

Shoot ‘em up is a subgenre of video games within the shooter subgenre in the action genre. There is no consensus as to which design elements compose a shoot ’em up. Some restrict the definition to games featuring spacecraft and certain types of character movement; others allow a broader definition including characters on foot and a variety of perspectives.

Basically, if your ship (or character) is flying and must blast everything, then it's a Shoot 'em up.

So yeah, discuss about your favorite shmups here.

Personally, i don't consider the shmups as a shooter subgenre, many of those “subgenres” are very different from each other, and i consider many of those (including shmups) as a unique genres. I putted the Wikipedia description only because i suck at doing descriptions myself.

i was going to mention Gradius. The third game is my favorite of the series, the SNES port is one of my favorites shmups on the SNES despite the slowdown.

talking about the SNES, anyone tried some SNES shmups? i tried many, my favorites are:
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
Super Aleste/Space Megaforce
R-Type 3
Axelay
Gradius 3

And i also tried some stinkers:
Strike Gunner S.T.G.
Thunder Spirits
Raiden Trad
Acrobat Mission
Blazeon
D-Force (easily the worst of them all)

Anyone here played Battle Bakraid? that game is awesome
