Cloud data re-enabled [Warning - Old Post! CV's are not enabled at the moment 1/30/2013]
Nope, they are funded by MIT and are not gonna sell stuff to ppl. Although maybe posters and shirts etc could help, like Minecraft(grant funded, small team, Scratch being free and what not
What if there was a kind of ‘Scratch Premium’. You buy it and get access to cool new blocks.
Scratch Premium = ‘Scratch being free and what not’ being possibly solved

I also am completely against Scratch Premium (as well as pretty much everyone on the site), as it would ruin everything. We are essentially a community of the same people, but if we introduce another class of people that have more money, then that is gone.
(Also, it has been said multiple times that Scratch will always be completely free)

NOOOOOOO!!! you can't make a “premium” programing language and a “free version of it”
that just wouldn't make sense

I know this isn't a very desirable solution, but wouldn't it work to just ban chat projects altogether? That way, we don't have an eight-character limit on cloud lists (which I can already think of a way to get around), so people can do other cool things with them. It wouldn't take a huge amount of moderator work, either, because you can add “Chat project” as a flag reason and automatically remove/permanently-unshare them if more than three users flag it as one. It's possible we may have to try to enforce this - but enforcement is an expensive proposition. For one thing, lots of Scratchers won't like it, which means that some may be reluctant to flag it. If that happens, you can get a lot of chatrooms that stay up for a long while b/c no one flags them, and that kind of gives people the idea that it's de facto ok.
It's also really unpopular, and puts us in a bad relationship with Scratchers. I don't mind taking action to stop someone who is being disrespectful; it's harder to justify taking action because they broke a rule made only because some people could break it in a way that might be bad. Then we're getting people in trouble because they are “breaking rules”, instead of because they are “actively being disrespectful.” May seem subtle, but it seems important to me.

Cloud data re-enabled [Warning - Old Post! CV's are not enabled at the moment 1/30/2013]
After some quick refactoring of code, Sdg1 and JohnM have patched the cloud data functionality, and it is now live again! Please test and report glitches on this forum.
Some of you may notice that the data in a cloud list now shows an elipsis (…) after 8 characters. Why, you may ask? the answer is: Chatrooms are hard to moderate. The elipsis is there to make it hard to make chatrooms with cloud variables. We have limited resources (grant funded, small team, Scratch being free and what not) and we just can't afford to have a giant team of mods watching chats all day to make sure nothing bad happens. Even if we could, running chatrooms is not one of our major goals. However, giving Scratchers powerful new tools to do awesome stuff (in the form of cloud data) is one of our major goals. How to reconcile these isn't so clear to me yet.
That said - I'm not sure the elipsis is a good solution (I can already think of a few ways to work around it). But it's an experimental step, and maybe it'll lead to something else. Or maybe some of you have ideas for creative alternative solutions to the problem that are practical, and don't involve gagillions of dollars and massive mod armies?Whatever we end up doing, it has to work for 26k+ active contributors per week.
Scratch On!
In my higscore project, cloud data restarts every few hours (it is set to 0). But only 1 cloud variable is restarting, the other one is working… and in my other project cloud data isnt being saved at all,it restarts every time the project page is refreshed…
