Pharaoh's Curse (Classic Retro Game)

https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/357866966/

Transport yourself back to 1984 for this home computer classic for the BBC B Micro, originally published by H-Soft.

You are an adventurer exploring a long lost Egyptian tomb. You can collect treasure, and find keys to open the locked doors to access further chambers.

Unfortunately, the Pharaoh's treasure is guarded by deadly snakes!

Luckily, you have at your disposal a torch and an unlimited supply of dynamite. If you shine the torch at the snakes, they are dazzled for a few seconds allowing you to sneak past them. If you drop a stick of dynamite on them, or they run over it, they are destroyed (but more will come!) Note you can only shine the torch left and right, and you can only drop one stick of dynamite at a time, which takes up to 4 seconds to detonate. I don't make up the rules!

There are secret passages to help you get around the maze.

Extra life at 10,000 points.

You don't have to collect all the treasure to complete a level, but collecting treasure also gives a time bonus which will be invaluable on later levels.

Controls:-
WASD/Arrows - move (or Z,X,',/ for proper retro feel)
Enter - shine torch (to stun snakes!)
Space - drop dynamite (to kill snakes!)
F - freeze/unfreeze
M - music on/off
Q - quit game

“Pharaoh's Curse” was a game made for the BBC B home computer published by H-Soft in 1984. The game is loosely based on the Konami arcade game “Tutankham”.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it! It was fun to recreate one of my favourite childhood computer games

Pharaoh's Curse (Classic Retro Game)

Some more hints and tips:-

  • There are only ever 5 snakes at a time. If a snake moves off screen or is destroyed, a new one spawns.

  • You can stun snakes with your torchlight. Stunned snakes can't hurt you, so you can run straight over them.

  • The torch can only be shone left or right.

  • You can kill stunned snakes by dropping a stick of dynamite as you pass, but of course if you do that a new one will spawn.

  • After about 5 seconds out of the light, the stun effect wears off and the snakes go back to normal.

  • Dynamite will detonate either when a snake touches it, or after 4 seconds. If you are still touching it after the 4 seconds it will kill you. (It will not kill you if it's been detonated by a snake)

  • Collecting items resets the time limit for the level. Later levels have shorter time limits, so collect items strategically to make the most of the time available.

  • Also the further you progress through the levels, the shorter the time it takes for snakes to spawn.

  • There are 4 different maze layouts. When you get to the end of the 4 mazes, you have to do the same four mazes backwards.

  • Levels 2 and 3 have two locked doors each. You have to unlock the first door before the key for the second door is revealed somewhere in the maze.

  • In my opinion, level 3 is the hardest!
